The Looming LS 500h is Preparing to Debut (Photos)

Set to debut in March at the Geneva Motor Show is the new 2018 LS 500h which follows the debut of the fifth gen LS at the Detroit Show back in January. Exact details on how the hybrid will differ than the normal V8 powered coupe are the topic of much speculation.

What's to come

1. Platform

Just like the gas drinking sibling, the LS 500h sedan will feature a long-wheelbase version of the same platform that underpins the grand touring LC 500 coupe. For a spacious sedan, the LS does have a lovely coupe-like silhouette that emphasizes how the big car will cut through the wind effortlessly with agility and comfort.

2. Omotenashi

Time and time again with the LS models, Lexus has sought to outdo itself with the concept of Omotenashi. This Japanese concept pertains to the hospitality that one gives to guests, and in the case of Lexus the level of care the car provides to the driver and passengers, while anticipating their needs, comfort, and protection from hazards. The aim of Lexus isn't to just top itself, but to exceed expectations of what the global luxury customers may be looking for in a vehicle.

3. Powerplant

The forthcoming LS 500h will most likely be powered by the same powerplant that is found in the LC 500h that was introduced last year. That system, a 3.5L V6 engine, hybrid electric motor, and ten-speed transmission will produce a total of 354 peak horsepower and 257 lb-ft of torque. However, we wouldn't be surprised if Lexus decided to drop the ten-speed transmission in favor of a continuously variable transmission that is used in their other hybrid models.

4. Aerodynamics

The LS hybrid won't look that much different from the normal gas-powered variant but will likely have some tweaks to the front end of the car where aero will be most important in maximizing fuel savings. All of the things that people have come to know about Lexus will continue on with the new hybrid such as the spindle grille, slim lighting fixtures, and striking style lines down the side of the car.

5. What's to come

Toyota has been one of the most vocal advocates of fuel-cell cars even though it is currently the largest automaker of hybrid cars, selling 10 million units to consumers so far. The current Mirai certainly is stylish and powerful enough to become a Lexus, or spin off a Lexus variant. Always forward thinking, Toyota now also seems to be considering a battery electric car of its own, after seeing the success and praise that Tesla enjoys, to make a splash in the marketplace with. Whether a Toyota all electric car be an affordable economy car like the Nissan Leaf, or a Lexus luxury halo model, like the Tesla remains to be seen.
