Keeping your windshield clean from dirt or soil can prevent micro scratches. Those little scratches can eventually build up to cause blinding glare from car headlights or the sun. Learn how to clean your window without causing damage with this quick how-to.

Materials Needed

  • Microfiber towels
  • Rain X
  • Windex
  • Detailer's clay

Step 1 - Wash the windshield

Pull up your windshield wipers. Wash your windshield with a dedicated window cleaner. Makes sure it's as clean of grit and grime as possible. You'll be able to remove some of the harder, more resistant particles with a clay bar in the next step.

Step 2 - Remove larger contaminants

Clean the larger, harder materials from the window using detailer's clay. Slide the clay over the glass to pick up any contaminants that weren't knocked off by washing. Use window cleaner to help the clay slide along your glass surface.

Alternatively, you can use a razor to scrape off whatever material has hardened on your glass. Make sure the surface is well lubricated with glass cleaner, then, slide the razor along the windshield at a 45 degree angle. Dry your window with a clean microfiber towel.

Step 3 - Coat window with a protectant

Dry your window with a clean microfiber towel. If you want, you can add a coating like Rain X. These products cover the window in a hydrophobic (water repellent) layer. This will keep goop like bird poop from sticking to your window.

Apply the protectant to your window with a spray bottle or a foam applicator pad. Wipe the window clean with a microfiber towel.
