Worth It?

Extended warranties are a favorite among automakers and dealers alike, for good reason - they're quite profitable for both. However, in some cases, at least, extended warranties can also be a good thing for consumers that are seeking a little extra peace of mind during the course of vehicle ownership. Thus, it's worth taking a closer look at Lexus' extended warranty, too.

General Coverage

Lexus refers to its extended warranty as Vehicle Service Agreements (VSA), which can provide extra years of coverage after the factory warranty has expired. There are a handful of plans available, but all of them must be purchased at a Lexus dealership before the four-year 50k-mile factory warranty expires, with costs that can be included in financing up front. Maintenance and repairs must be completed at a Lexus dealer using factory-approved parts. Customers can choose between $0 and $100 disappearing deductibles, and can also transfer coverage to a new owner once.

Extra Care Coverage

From there, customers have three levels of Extra Care coverage to choose from -  Extra Care Platinum, Extra Care Gold, or Extra Care Powertrain. The Platinum plan provides bumper-to-bumper coverage for most mechanical breakdowns, while Gold covers key areas such as the powertrain, air conditioning, and cooling/fuel systems. Powertrain coverage applies only to the engine, transmission, and drive axles, but all three plans are good for four years or 50k miles.

Maintenance

Additionally, Lexus Luxury Care offers customers a prepaid maintenance plan that extends already-included services and adds additional coverage for terms ranging from two years and 20k miles up to five years and 90k miles. This package includes major and routine maintenance, along with multi-point inspections, and a loaner when service is being completed.

Roadside Assistance

All Lexus Extra Care plans include 24-hour roadside assistance as well, which includes things like towing, jump starts, and fuel delivery, plus up to $35 daily in rental car reimbursement for five days when a vehicle is in the shop, along with $50 a day in travel protection for meals and lodging for up to four days if you're more than 150 miles from home when your vehicle breaks down - or $100 a day for five days if you have Platinum coverage.

What Isn't Covered

As one might imagine, the Lexus Extra Care plans don't cover everything that can go wrong, with many exclusions including things that need to be replaced due to normal wear and tear, damage that stems from misuse or neglect, environmental damage, plus wheels and tires, spark plugs, bumpers, carpeting, hoses, fluids, windshield wiper blades, and structural framework and welds.

Costs

The costs of Lexus' Extra Care plans vary based on a variety of factors, including the type of plan one chooses, the vehicle they're applying it to, and the term limits. However, these costs all fall within a range of $1,637 to $4,650, so it's certainly worth checking them out if you plan on keeping your Lexus for a long time.
