What are the widest tires I can fit on a 8.5 inch rim. Is 275/40/18 doinable?

245 is your best bet if you want the tire to be flush with the rim. You might be ok going with 255, it might bubble out slightly...anything wider than that then for sure it'll bubble out significantly...

I spoke with dicount tires and they said that 275 would fit, but 265 would be better. What do you guys think?

I'd have to agree with Seize...245 would be the best width. If you want a 'lil more curb protection then go with 255. Anything over 255 is just not gonna look right.

that's a joke man... 275 on 8.5 that's funny... 245 is the most common, 255 starts to stretch it. on 9.5 275 is optimal. you can do the math
