Default 18/20 combination

is anybody running an 18" in the front, and a 20" in the rear? I've been around hot rods my whole life, so most of the cars I'm around have like a 16/18 or a 17/20 combo. I was wondering what CL thought of the idea. I've seen a picture of one and he had 18x8(235/40/18) up front, and 20x8.5(245/35/20) in the rear and had Eibach lowering springs with an Erubini Shogun Body Kit. It looked good to me. Be as honest as you can, and tell me the truth. It won't hurt my feelings, I just want more opinions. Thanks

Josh

Not a great look, IMO. 2" is a huge difference in diameter to pull off... it will look like you need to lower the front of the car about about a foot (!) to try to balance the look. There are technical issues, too. You may create havoc for the ABS and TCS systems due to a difference in tire rotational diameter.

To match the tire diameters, you'll need to run (for example) a 245/45-18 front and a 285/30-20 rear. I don't know if you've seen these tires side-by-side, but the 45-series have really tall sidewalls. Yuck.

If you were building a '32 HighBoy, I'd say go ahead and run 18" front/20" rear. The modern cars have fender arches that are about the same radius (except for the NSX, Corvette C5, and Chrysler Crossfire, which were designed for staggered-diameter wheels), which lend themselves well to matching the diameters front & rear.

As far as I can tell, the reason most people do the staggered-diameter thing (for aftermarket wheels) is they really want to stagger the WIDTH of the wheels front and rear, but the wheels they are looking at don't come in appropriate widths of the same diameter. For example, "Brand X" wheels come in 18x8, 19x8.5, and 20x9.5... your choices are limited.

So, are you going for a Hot Rod look, or just want to try something different?

IMHO, that set up kinda makes it look like you are missing something up front. in the case of staggered WIDTHS, its not bad, because it creates a flair illusion of width. But the different size tire thing is not my bag, baby (say it like Austin Powers ) Especially not a 2" difference.

I did see the IS that I think you are talking about (it has Axis Mod 7s) and i must admit it was pretty sweet, but wasnt it 19/20. I think the only time you should do it is if your car cannot hold a 20 in the front properly, like the IS or a older CLK or something.

Do what ya like!

thanks for the comments. I guess I'll have to try something more practical. I had 20's with my stock suspension and I loved them. Then I came back down to 18's b/c I wanted to lower it. After I got the Eibach springs on with the 18's, they looked too small to me. Everyone told me 20's would not fit in the front after being lowered which gave me this idea. Let me ask you guys another question, has anyone done 20's with their lowered sc and not had any rubbing problems?

No, 18/20 is wrong, this ain't no Plymouth Prowler. It will mess up your suspension, computer settings etc. The car is not built for that big of a difference.

Alot of guys on here have SCs with 20s on them, here is a pic of one that had 20s and Eibachs, the height is not that low, but it probably would be the best trade off of drop/ride.

Din's SC- 20" LR5 and Eibach springs

So, you have an SC? I guess I thought you had a GS... dunno why...

Unfortunately, "Everyone" was wrong- there are several SC and GS guys (and gals?) dumped on 20s... it's all about what offset you use.

SC dumped on 20's? Yeah, I'd say it's do-able...

Through my own research, I found out that the SC's front fenders are very shallow. There are a few things you need to look out for if you plan on lowering it quite a bit.

Info - '92 SC400, JIC-Magic/AMC body kit, JIC SF-1 Coilovers, iForged 20" 2-piece wheels, Daizen sways, Toyo T1-S tires, JIC-Magic exhaust, JIC-Magic front Carbon/Aluminum STB, StopTech 4 Piston/14" brake kit, and a few other things...
