Default Tires - 50 vs 55 in a stock and wheel locks

Hey--
I just got a majorly flat tire, and was looking to get all four new tires. Right now, I'm running 225/50R16's on the stock rims, but upon looking for the new tires, it came to my attention that I'm supposed to be running 225/55R16's. The tires sales-person said that running 50's would "damage my transmission..." True or false?

Also, I had a problem in trying to get the wheel lock off. I was trying to get all of the lug nuts off including the wheel lock, but while I was using the wheel lock key, the entire thing went flying off (wheel lock key and the lug-nut remover-wrench [I don't know what it's called, exactly]). Now, I can't fit my key into the wheel lock lug nut. What can I do??

Thanks for your help!

running a lower profile will just make the speedometer be of by a little, but since you are used to it, i doubt that would matter. it is no different in the eyes of the transmission than running 5 to 8 miles per hour faster on the road with 55's. so unless he might be talking about premature wear by the transmission turning over more times with the lower profile tires, but the question is "turning over more times than what?"

if you drive 55 normally with 50 series, but another guy drives 60 all the time with 55's you have the same wear on the tranny so to make that assumption he would have to reference a certain speed to go buy and speed is never constant so.......

sounds like bull to me. someone else may know more about it.

My SC400 originally came with 225/55-16 tires. But I replaced them with 245/50-16 tires, which are within 1 or 2 mm of the stock diameter. So you get an inch wider tire, with the same diameter. Pics are posted in the SC forum (see https://www.clublexus.com/forums/sho...threadid=64301).

I'd "steer" clear of any tires sales-person that says running 50's would "damage your transmission....."!
