Just back from my 20,000 miles service. The techs tell me that all four of the 17 inch Bridgestone Portenza tires are worn on the inside edge and need to be replaced soon. Is this common on these tires at 20,000 miles? Also, what suggestions are there for replacements. I really did like the traction, but not the road noise on the Bridgetones.The tech suggested Michelin pilots. Any info would be greatly appreciated.Thanks. Mark

In my experience 20,000 miles isn't too bad on those tires. My Lexus dealer told me to expect only 12 - 15K out of tires with 17" wheels.

I moved your question to the wheels and tires forum, where the same 'what tire do you recommend' has been asked many times. Try using the search button up on top of the forum to get a lot of good answers.

Michelins are good, I have had good luck with Bridgestone Pole Position S-03 (not OEM Bridgestones).

We had about 24k miles on our OEM Bridgestone and it was making a horrendous amount of noise.

There's a survey in the tire forum that you could look into to see what people use and conduct your own reasearch to see what meets your needs.

Some of the criteria, not in any order:

Price
Noise
Wear/Durability
Look
Summer/All Season
Named brand
Ability to rotate side to side
etc.

People are running tires from a wide variety of manufacturers: Kumho, Yoko, BFG, Pirelli, Dunlop, Bridgestone, Michelin, etc.

We're running BFG g-Force KDWS on our stock 17".

Wow, 20K on those tires is pretty good, I only got around 17K and really did not drive aggressive at all. I replaced mine with Dunlop SP5000's. They are much quieter, and give MUCH better rain and snow traction. I have around 17K miles on these, and it looks as though I am only going to get another 10K more. 27K miles is not bad, but I was hoping for even more since they have such a higher treadwear rating.

I replaced the RE030s at 15k. Wet and dry traction was pretty good even then, but they had gotten VERY bad from a tramlining standpoint.

Now I,too, am an S03 Pole Position fan (despite the fact that they are worthless in snow and we've had two snow dumps since I got them...........but that's what wifey's RX is for!). Essentially no more tramlining, much quieter that the OEMs even when they were new, and I actually think they are more comfortable. Wet and dry traction exceeds the OEMs, also. Plus, they are about $50/ tire cheaper from TireRack!!

I just replaced my stock rubber with S03 Pole Positions, and think they're great. Much better than stock.

Got my GS400 with Dunlop SP5000 and replaced it at about 26K miles. The new tire I am using is Dunlop SP9000 and I like the SP9000 better than the SP5000. There were times that the car slides during rainy days with DunlopSP5000 and the VSC light keeps on blinking. I tried pushing the GS on cornering with the SP9000 and the grip is very good,plus the ride is quieter than the SP5000.Both tires are Z-rated mounted in 17"alloy wheels.The original tires that goes with the car was Michellin Pilot but I requested Lexus to replace those because of noisy and bumpy ride.

Thanks for all the great info. I am doing the research as we speak. I had no idea that replacements were so expensive and NOISY for the 17 inch wheels. If anyone knows of a quiet and reasonably priced replacement for the 430's tires, please let us all know. Thanks. Mark

Try checking tires on tirerack.com. I bought my SP9000 from them and I am satisfied. Paid just over $600.00 for 4 tires last year including delivery.Did my research around Lexus dealerships but they seldom stock the SP9000(they do have SP5000though) and the quote range from $800+ up to $1200+. I am also in the process of buying new tires for the LS400 and need to replace my orig.Turanza in the LS430.The Turanzas are quiet but the threadwear is low (i think it's 100+) the Dunlops have 280(SP9000)/320 threadwear w/ A temp and A traction. hmmmm....this is indeed an expensive purchase but we have no other choice. We are driving expensive cars. I'm afraid I have no money to buy gas after I purchase all my tires.

BFG g-Force KDWS

Z-rating, 400 Treadwear, AA Traction, A Temperature, non-directional (so you can rotate front to back and side to side).

Got them at Costco for $114/ea (235/45/17).

TOPSPEED

Replaced mine at 18k, put on a set of Yokohama AVS ES100. Great tires, much quieter and better wet traction than stocks.

Thanks to all for the great info. I ordered a set of Michelin piot a/s from tire rack. They are shipping them to my dealer for installation. I was very impressed by their price and professionalism. Next question...What pressure shoul be used in these new tires? I can't tell you how many times in the past that I told dealer to not touch the tire pressure levels. Each time in spite of that, The techs would drop the pressure way too low and make the ride too soft. Thanks in advance for your input. MArk

I went through the same situation you were in and ended up getting Michelin Pilot Sport A/S based on all the great reviews. 5K miles later, it's a great tire, nice and quite (for now) and such an improvement over the OEM tires.
