We found a gash in the right rear tire of our RX-400H (see picture, and the gash goes all the way across the tire). And could really use some advice on a few questions:

*Does this tire have to be replaced or can it be safely repaired?

*If it is replaced, do we have to replace any other tires as well to match?? The Lexus dealer said we would not have to replace the others since their treads measured 8/32 (they are Goodyear Comfortred Touring, and only ~21 months old with light city driving (though have ~25K miles on them)

*Can anyone guess what could have caused this damage? Could it be a defect in the tire? (what would cause the slit to be in the sidewall as well?)

Definitely cannot be repaired... Being as that goes across the tread completely, without a better inspection, I would say it is a defect. In fact, almost 100% sure, but again, without seeing it, it screams defect. You can get away with replacing only one, you are within the guidelines for an AWD vehicle, and if it isn't AWD, then it doesn't matter that much anyways - just make sure it is replaced with the same tire. Goodyear should be giving you credit on that tire anyways...
