Question Wider tires on factory rims?

I've done searches but found no helpful info on my particular situation.

My newly acquired Lexus SC300 ('92) appears to have the stock rims (215/60-15) with Firestone Affinities on them (I know, I know, it wasn't my idea).

If I want wider tires (not looking for racing spec, just better street handling), what size would they be to fit on the stock rims? 235/55-15? As far as I can tell there is no such size as 235/55-15.

I'd like to not affect the odo, if possible. Do I really have to get bigger rims? I can't afford to do that right now and the tires are going to require replacement sometime in the next 5 months.

It would look crazy but the tire size your sugesting should fit.

Try 225/60/15's, the SC 400 has 225/55/16s.
