Default Tire Thread

Are there any cons on replacing a bad tire with a different model tire but of the same make due to the thread pattern?

What do you mean? Like a different brand or direction/asymmetrical/dotted out pattern?

I would want the same make and model to avoid wear issues and ride problems.

you talking like Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 or A/S, or Eagle F1 GS-D3 and a Eagle F1 A/S?

Either way, most tire specialists will tell you this is not a recommended or accepted practice. It is best to have the same tire on each corner.

The replacement tire cost in the upper 300s. Yokahama makes them and I was wondering if any new Yokahama would do? Or does the thread pattern actually make a difference? I should right? Given the spare not being the same as the rest of the tires?

If you do not want to change all 4 tires, and you need to replace a minimum of 1, and the original style tire is not available for whatever reason, it is prudent to replace a pair, so that both tires on that axle are the same - this minimizes braking and cornering differences for the most part... in a perfect world, we would replace the whole set, however, that is not economically ideal for many people... If your car is all wheel drive, however, throw that out the door, all 4 tires on an AWD car need to be the same make/model, and have similar tread depths as well (no more than 4/32" difference)

also, replacing with a different model of any particular brand of tire is no better than replacing with an entirely different brand altogether... if you were to pull a spec sheet from a manufacturer and compare even simple things like overall diameter, tread width, and such, you would find variances from model to model - not to mention different tread design, tread compounds, etc...

I recommend replacing in pairs as mitsuguy said making sure that they are the same speed rating ad style of tire that you are matching. For example matching "H" rated performance all season with "H" rated performance all season in the same or a different brand.
