Default Stay away from Yokohama S. Drive!!!

So as some of you might now I recently purchased my TSW Kyalami 20x8.5 and 20x10 a while ago... They came with Nitto NT555 all the way around with 245/35/20 up front and 275/30/20 in the rear... So I had to replace the rear tires cuz they were bald and with the current set up that I had my rear tires were thinner than the front so I moved up to a 285/30/20 in the rear... So after doing research on prices a good name brand tire in that size averaged at about $250 and up... so when I saw Yokohama for $200 a piece I didnt think twice about buying them... But after I had them mounted my handling was completely different, everytime I would go over 80 and switch lanes my car would feel like it was going to lose control... I don't really know how to say it but my rear end felt mushy... To sum it up it was a scary experience... So the manager at Discount took care of me and I swapped them out for nittos and I paid the difference all together I paid about $750 with warranties.. and needless to say the car feels alot better and im not worried about the handling anymore... But I thought i'd just give a heads up to any of you guys that think the Yokohamas are a good deal... This was just one of those instances where I got what I paid for... -Jayson

you were able to resolve the situation with the mgr at Discount. That always seems to be the challenging part.

That might just be the tires breaking in. When they manufacture the tires, there is a slightly slippery mold material on the outside of the tire. It takes a hundred miles or two to wear it off. I had the same problem with my last set of new tires. That's why I don't buy new tires anymore. They cost too much and I go through them in a few months

Good thing I know someone that works at a porshe dealership that can get me the take-offs from the 997 Carrera Turbos. I don't know if those people have too much money or what, but most of the tires I get have 60-70% tread left. AND...they're all Michelin Pilot Sport 2's which usually cost $350-$400 PER TIRE!

I know that new tires do require some time to break in, but it's very possible that they were defective. It sounds like your sidewall was flexing excessively! I'd expect a little sidewall motion on higher aspect tires, but not on 285/30-20's.

I've had some S-Drives now for about 800 miles, 245/40-18. The sidewall is a bit softer and while turn in isn't as sharp as my previous tire, they feel pretty nice on mine.

YMMV, so glad you had a shop to make the adjustment and get a tire you like. Yoko has a 30 day return so it further sweetens the deal.

It appears that you expected the same performance from 2 different tire manufacturers on your car at the same time. Mismatching tires is not the best way to guarantee top performance characteristics.

Indeed, this sounds like a case where having all four of the same tires on the vehicle was the best way to go.
