Default Need help with Tire size "downgrade"

I currently have the Manufacturer recommended tire size: 225 40 18 Front and 255 40 18 rear. Are there any consequences (positive and negative) if I switch to 225 40 18 all-around? Thanks for any info.

usually with the 225 40 18 front and 255 40 18 rear the rear wheel is wider then the front, example 18x7.5 front and 18x8.5 rear. 225 on a 8.5 will be a slight stretch, it be ok but will look different from the front. also if your car has traction control, it might effect it a bit because the circumference of the new tire size is different from the recommended (car thinks its loosing traction because new tire is spining faster.
i'll go with whats recommended, do it right.

Sounds like you got the tire size for a sports package on either a bimmer or a benz... if thats the case you definitely want to stay with the wider 255mm rear tires... your car needs all the traction from the rear spinning tires it can get! Only reason to switch to more narrow tires is if you are switching to snow tires for the winter and in that case, it would work better and be much cheaper to buy a set of 17s with 225/45R17 snow tires.

your rears will be a tad more stretched, but you wont notice a ride difference
my guess is you have like a 7/8 stagger
i run a 205 on an 8 normally

from the books ive read, TCS is normally engaged when one wheel is spinning faster than the other....so that means your post has no relevance.

if that was the case, when you changed rim sizes( which normally tires sizes are changed, believe it or not to smaller that stock Outer diameter in most cases), it would affect TCS....and it doesnt.

Default Thank you all for your input

Thank you for all of your information and suggestions.
A little more info: The reason I asked was because I got the car pre-owned with 8K miles. Previous owner had really nice rim on it but he didn't account for the offset. Therefore the rear tires rub the fenders when going over dips.
(I maybe wrong but) I thought the smaller width would help a little plus same size tire would allow me to rotate thus helping me save money as well blah, blah, blah. As you can see I'm totally new to this RIM, Tire size, "offset", rubbing issue.
Anyway, took my car to a Wheel/Tire place near LAX and the guy install a Spacer on the spring. It resolved 80% to 90% of my problem. Therefore I may stick with the Manufacturer recommended size.

P.S. I love this site and its forum.

if you just roll your rear fenders, you can keep nice wheels, and it wont rub...
