Default Offsets vary by center design?

yo guys, i ordered a set of wheels for the 2gs and requested a 20x8.5 +37 and a 20x10 +38 and the "engineer" at the company said its best, based on the exact wheel design i'm getting, to have a +34 and +43. granted, the dude has the same car and also trimmed his inner fender linings, but i'm worried the +34 up front requires more work than anticipated and the +43 is gonna sink in

its a 3-piece wheel that's just a flat 10 split-spoke design, kinda like the current m3's 19" wheels, so it ain't funky like piaa superrozza's and such

i've just never heard of a face affecting offset and backspacing, just widths. can anyone concur with him or tell me he's blowing smoke up where i don't like?

It's the disk type of the wheel that differentiates the center design, not the offset.

there's nothing particular about the disk type that i requested, and he knows what i am and am not trying to clear. i know some centers are made differently for bolt patters, but again, i don't see how that changes what an offset should be

isn't an offset an offset an offset?
