Default Staggered vs All around Tire wise..

i used the search and didnt find anything :[

well i was just wondering which will cost more money on the tires... on the long run..

since staggered u have to replace the rears "constantly" while all around you can do tire rotation

i run staggered, and with a good alignment, my rear BFG KDW's are going to last 25-30k miles... the fronts probably 30-40k...

I'll replace the set as I want to try out the RE050 Bridgestones, but if I didn't want to do some testing, I'd just replace the rears and be done with it...

The alternative, if they were all the same size, is that I would have rotated them, so they all lasted 30-35k (in the middle) and I would have replaced them as a set, instead of two at a time...

Well I can tell you one thing. Club Lexus does not set tire prices. I would highly suggest searching on Tires.com. Also, you cannot rotate staggered tires front to back BUT you can rotate them side to side. For an SC I would definetly do a staggered setup only because it looks so nice its not even funny.

Ok, so, this sparked some interest to me, so I made up a spreadsheet with tire change intervals...

I picked a common size setup 245/40-18 / 275/35-18 versus just straight 245/40-18 all around...

I picked a moderately priced, good performance tire, the BFG KDW.

In a 245/40-18 size, Tire Rack lists them at 187.00 / tire... in 275/35-18 size, they run 228.00 / tire...

I picked 120k miles as a length of time to have tires on the car... In the end, the goal was to have almost worn out tires on the car, and, going based on personal experience and maybe being a little conservative, changing tires at set intervals... (every 24k miles for rear tires, every 36k for fronts - thats what I am seeing as replacement interval with real aggressive camber settings, so if anything, most people should get better) Now, if I was able to rotate, in the end, I would replace tires, the whole set, every 30k miles - the added wear to the rear tires would be spread out over the whole set, requiring replacement of the whole set at intervals...

First off, staggered sizes are always more expensive, because a wider tire is more expensive, plain and simple...

First off, same size is a lot easier to explain... We install a set when new, costs $748.00 Replace at 30k, 60k and 90k intervals, and we have worn out tires around 120k... $748 / set x 4 = $2992 total cost of ownership (plus mounting and balancing, but thats negligible)

For staggered, the fronts will still be replaced 4 times, and have some decent wear left on them at 120k, but, the rears will have one more replacement... After the math, to get a staggered set to last 120k, you are looking at $3776 (keep in mind one thing, the rears are more expensive, so initial buy in cost $830 vs $748)

One more thing to take into account - you don't need to rotate tires every 6k miles with staggered... IMO, $800 over 120k miles is WELL WORTH not having to rotate tires (and I work at a auto shop), and is also WELL WORTH the better looks... If you do the math, it costs 2/3 of a cent per mile...

you still can't rotate, and you typically have a wider more expensive tire on the rear...
