Chicago winter, Yoko Avid V4S enough?
Hi everyone,
Last year when I bought this car, it came with almost bald Yoko Avid V4S tires and before I could have the opportunity to replace the tire, I was caught in a snowstorm on the Interstate. I was going 25mph trying to keep the car straight and I let go of the accelerator and the rear end of the car swung right to left to right and out to the side. Didn't hit anything and waited out at the Oasis for snow trucks to salt the road.
Remember that was almost bald, and I have replaced them with the same tires, used about 8000 miles in the last year. Will it be enough for Chicago winter or do I need dedicated winter tires?
Thanks all

with RWD car I will put some winter tires on, when I have my GS I have winter tires and no problem all winter. You maybe OK with traction but when it's time for emergency stop You can have big problems. So, I go with winter tires and be safe.

I have a 00 GS400 in Chicago
You will need a snow tire set up.
I use my stock 16 Chromies with Dunlop Winter Sport M3s 225/55VR16
I drive like normal in Chicago winters with much improved traction.
Previous winters I tried my High Perf All Seasons like Mich Pilot Sport All Seasons, Pirelli PZero Nero M+S, Dunlop Asymetricals...none of these compared to an actual winter performance tire.
Braking and Turning is a huge improvement.

I use my Range Rover or Bronco.
Besides that GET SOME WINTER TIRES. I got stuck in the first snow storm. My ride home is usually 7-10 min. Well... it took me a good hour to get home. I wanted to kick my car i was soo frustrated.

I purchased these tires last December for my GS. I really liked these tires until it snowed. Then I found myself sliding though intersections and not being able to stop. As I was driving into work one day a Chrysler Concorde slowed down and turned and then I tried to slow down and turn. I slid right on by work.
Luckily I was able to return these on the 30 day ride guarantee. I am now riding on some Bridgestone RE960AS Pole Positions. These are wonderful tires. I am just waiting for the first snowfall to see how good they are as a all-season.
