Default Rotating tires left<->right

Well, it seems my tires have come to the end of their life. Apparently, the belts are showing through.

I've got a '98 LS with bilstein (L-Sportline) and H&R springs. With it lowered, even though the mechanics say it is still barely on spec, I've had issues with the inner part of the tire wearing much quicker than the rest.

I was thinking, on the next set, instead of rotating front to rear, what about dismounting each tire, and flipping it to the other side? My theory being, if I move the tires left to right and vice versa, what was on the inside will now be the outer part of the tire. I am looking to more evenly wear the tires. Would this hold up in real life, or are there safety reasons for not moving the tires side to side?

Thanks,

Brian

P.S. I'm finally getting rid of these Dunlop Direzzas, which have been the THE WORST tire I have ever ridden on.

Thanks for the reply. What would be the difference with directional tires? The other have the same treads ether way, so would they be the same if I switched them side to side too?

Thanks,

Brian

hehe, read again, i said as long as they are directional

on the other hand if it's assymetric tires then you can't do this, since the outside is always outside, no matter which side it is

I guess I'm not getting it. If you moved a tire from the left front to the right front, it would still be pointing in the same direction, right? Just that was was the inside of the tire would now be on the outside. Right?

Thanks,

Brian

Brian -- you're right. Your idea would work with both directional and nondirectional tires. Obviously, with directional tires you would have to dismount and remount in order to switch sides of the car. With nondirectional tires, you don't need to dismount/remount to move a tire to the other side. However, if you do that, the outside of the tire will still be the outside of the tire, so it would defeat the purpose from your perspective. I think Henry missed that part of it.

there is a THIRD type of tire, assymetric. those tires only have "inside" and "outside", and of course, outside is always on the outside. so with those tires, you can't do these tricks

I plan on doing it, too. I expect it will help with tread life. Is the best way to rotate to move front driver to rear passenger, and front passenger to rear driver? I figure it would take care of both the side to side and front to back. IIRC, this is how we all used to be recommended to rotate tires.

Thanks,

Brian

Yes as mentioned earlir, it'll work as long as the tires don't have the "this side must be mounted on the outside" label on it.
