i agree. thats a bit too wide. Your tires will be about 10" wide..So there will be 1" of tire sticking out of the wheel on each side. My friend went oversized on his acura integra, but only because he needs the extra rubber for his turbo setup. lol. It looks funny, but it serves a purpose. On our GS, it's not needed.

There is no need on a GS? I have TC, LSD 3.76 gears. Traction is a bit of an issue. On Pirelli.com it says Nero M+S in 255/45-17 fit on a 8-10 wide rim. What do you think?

Hey Rom, what do you mean by optimum?
I am just trying to understand this. Not second guessing you.
I just want traction on the stock wheels as well.
What do you feel would be the negatives?
Appreciate your input.

if you want more traction, get wider rims to go along with the tires because if your tire width is a lot wider than your rims, your sidewalls will compress more when you turn. You'll have more sidewall than you want.
Try to imagine your tires as if they were flat. Notice how the sidewall is curved.. I guess thats the best analogy I can come up with. I wish I have a visual image I can show you.

I think what everybody is trying to say is that the sidewall of the tire will look pushed out, which is not what everybody is used to seeing. Muscle cars and Hot Rods have been doing this for a long time, so I don't see a reason why it's "wrong". If it's within the manufacturer's specified range of wheel width then it's only asthetically unpleasing to see by other people.
I found a couple of pictures to show the difference.
I think people are trying to tell you that it's going to look too "meaty"

If the wheel is too small, the tire/wheel setup will not handle as well. You also risk losing the tire bead off of the rim more easily. Check the manuf specs for your tire type and size to get max/min rim width. If you're over the min, go 4 it, not recommended otherwise.
