Default What tire size for 9.5 wide rim??

I just bought a set of 18x8.5 and 18x9.5 rims and I need tires.

What is the range of tire widths I can safely use for these wheels?

I know 245/45 in front and 275/45 in the rear is recommended but how about 225/40
255/40?

What will that look like?

Help please.

Well if you want to stay within spec.....then the standard 245/40....275/35 will do the trick

If you want those other sizes then a 225/45....255/40 will work and stay within diameter spec. Whats the reason for the less wide tire???

Actually, the recommended sizes are 245/40 front and 275/35 rear.

With the sizes you are asking, the tires will be stretched so the rubber will angle in more. You will also get less sidewall. Any reason why you are going so "slim"?

Neo is right on the "normal" sizing Clifford. Actually, I was running 285/35 on the rear (Goodyear GS-D3) with NO rubbing at all. Of course, I needed the extra traction! The fat tires look good too!
245/40 worked great on the front...

I was thinking about going slimmer because I found a good deal for the tires. But... if you think it's too slim, I'll just wait until my birthday (july) and my girl said she'd buy me tires for my b-day. So I may just wait and roll around on the oems for a while longer.

Thanks for the input fellas. Also - big thanks to Mike (FutureGS400) for the wheels!

c.

Edit: Anyone have any photos of what a 255/45 will look like on a 9.5 width wheel? Super stretched?

not stretched. 255 is fine. I've run 225 all the way to 285 on 9.5

I currently have 225/35/19 on 19x9.5 Now that is stretched!

Clifford, the problem with a 255/45 is not so much the width IMO-that tire will be almost 1.5" taller than stock which will hurt your performance (effectively changing your final drive ration). Stock diameter is around 25.5 inches which is why a 275/35 tire is the "right" size for rear. The 255 width would only be about 1/2" narrower which when divided on either side of the rim is only 1/4 difference on the outside (visible) side of the rim.
In your initial post, you put the size at 255/40 which would be closer in diameter. That size would only be about 1/2" taller and 1/2" narrower the the 275/35 which isn't that much. The 225/40 fronts would be about the same-1/2" narrower but 1/2" shorter than stock.
Reason is because although both are 40 series aspect ratio, when the width goes up, the diamter goes up too (which is why it's called aspect ratio )
I know it's tempting to jump on a good deal, but IMHO, it would be better to let that nice young lady get you the "right" tires in the size you want... Those Works deserve the best!

I would vote for getting tires that fit your needs and not what is the best deal you can get. If you want to stretch, that's fine. If you do not, get tires that fit better.

well put Neo. I stretch because I need the fender clearance and because I'm running extreme width/offset. I also love the look.

Don't try this at home!

ok- i've decided to go with the proper tires for my wheels. no point in getting stretched tires and then getting all squirrelly on a turn and putting the GS into a wall.

Thanks all for the help.

BTW- Everywhere I've looked has said that the Work Termist TM1 wheels are 2-piece but when I checked out the bolts on the face of the rim- they're just for show... they don't actually take apart the wheel.

Can anyone lend some insight as to why they're marketed as 2 piece rims? I can't take them apart.

i thought the tm1 is 3 piece? could be wrong, i will leave that to others

a lot of 3 piece wheels, they are kinda sealed together anyway. a lot of time you can't really take them apart easily at all
