Default 225/55r16 vs 225/60r16 - Speedo Differences, etc.

Hey, I have an SC300 with the GS400 rims on it. I need some new tires and went to Costco and they told me I'd have to replace all four tires to 225/55/R16 tires because mine are 225/60/R16 on the car and those are not what the manufacturer "reccomends". They also woulnd't just replace it with new 60's. The 60's came with my car and I'm sure theres not a huge difference, but I was just wondering how much of a difference in the speedo it would make, if anything. I figured treadwear from new to bald would probably make a bigger difference but I was just curious.

The car did come with 225/55/16's...the only difference between the ones that you have on your car is that they are 5 mm taller.

What are you looking to accomplish with the new tires? I just put my 16's back on (had 18's on for years) and had some 245/50/16's but on my GS4 and they look great. They are 20 mm wider (almost an inch) and a shorter side wall which will help decrease the tire rolling on hard cornering. These may sound wide to some, but they do look good....plus Discount Tire says that a GS4 w/ 16's can fit a 255/50/16 without a problem.

I just simply needed some new tires. The rears were so bald it was rediculus!!!!!!

I was just wondering how much of an effect it really made on the car. I can definately see how the tire is smaller now, but its not a worry at all. Now I'm just wondering why the previous owner of these rims didn't put the right tire size on???

At least my speedo is right now

I just put on new tires on my stock rims this weekend... went from 215/60/16 to 225/55/16. Haven't noticed much of a difference, and don't really care if the speedometer is slightly off. (besides, the tires I put on are what were on the '02+ GS300s I believe).

In your case, I would go with what the shop/mfg is recommending.... btw, I put on Yokohama Avid V4S tires... look pretty agressive, appear to be a better tire than the stock Turanzas, quieter, and have a 520AA rating I believe. You might want to check them out, got'em from Americas tire for about $100/each.

so far so good for me too. While they don't fill out the wheel well any better (actually makes the gap look slightly bigger)... I'm still very happy. Not looking to drop the vehicle too much, so I was willing to give up that aspect to have a slightly wider tire that is a 100% improvement over the stock Turanzas. Directional tire tread on the tires is pretty nice too.

I believe 215/60/16 was the stock size for the GS300 and 225/55/16 for the GS400 (at least for some period of time). However, I believe at some point the stock size for the GS300 changed from 215/60/16 to 225/55/16 (maybe in 02?).

When I bought my 2000 GS3 Platinum edition, it came std with 225/55/16 but I believe the non
platinum size was the 215/60/16 for the GS3 in 2000. Don't know exactly when 225 became std for all gs3's
