opinions on new tires
I have already searched the forum and didn't find the answer I was looking for.
I am assuming that when everyone replaces the 16" tires on a GS400 they are staying with the stock size 225/55/R16. If this isn't the case please respond with what size you went with and how good/bad it worked for you.
What brand/model of tire have you purchased for your GS400 and how good/bad have they been for you. I would like to get real opinions from actual use of that tire.
I am looking for an all season tire with great traction, handling and must be quiet. The factory Goodyear GT + 4's weren't quiet as I would have wanted.
Thanks for your input.

I would suggest that you try the TIRE RACK. Go to http:// www.tirerack.com They have a wide variety of tires to suit your driving style and weather/terrain requirements.
I live in California and I have the stock 225/55-16 tire. I had the Yokohama A550's for my first set, and then I moved to the Michelin Pilot Sport 225/55 WR-16. They are quieter in my opinion than the stock michelin tire or the stock Goodyear GT + 4. I never had a favorable opinion of the GT + 4, but that is me.
For my tastes and needs, I find the stick 16 inch tire ideal. The 17's in my opinion is much noisier, and to me the noise and tire wear increases as the tire/wheel combination gets bigger.
Give tire rack and a few other online tire websites a try and see what YOU like. Discount tire.com is another website to check.

Thanks for your quick reply. I have been to these sites, but I prefer to get responses from owners of the same car. A tire make work well on one and not another.

Somewhat tricky to make it work but the TR site does allow you to read owners opinions on the GS400/300 specifically.
Actually not that hard. Put in your vehicle and look for Gray Button that says Read Reviews for this Vehicle!! I do notice that it is very rare that an enthusiast that puts out big money for a set of tires then turns around and bashes them, Human nature.
Currently loving the Kumhos SPT's on my LS400,btw.

If you want to stick with the stock wheels but would like a wider tire, note that the 245/50-16 tire size will fit, has the same diameter, but is slightly wider.

i got a set of
Yokohama YK420
P235/55R-16 96H B (43972) $109 each
from America's tire. i did not notice much noise.
i think it's a good deal for the money.
Cons: handling is too soft, i think. the look of the tire is not aggressive. But, i believe if i want better handlling, i'll hear more noise from the tires.
why? i've been on a BMW 530I, it has high performance tires (forgot the brand and model) and it is pretty noisy!
i believe that, if you want 'performance' tire, you tend to lose the quietness of the ride, or you have to pay a lot more for a set of tires.

I am leaning toward:
Yokohama AVS dB S2
Continental ContiExtremeContact
I would like to keep the total cost below $500. Can't find a Yoko dealer locally and the price I got on the Conti was $50 per tire higher than I found on the web which puts them at $661.
I don't want the tires to be any louder than the Goodyear GT + 4's that came standard on the car.

Falken performance all seasons
Suggest you try a set of Falken Ziex ZE-512 on your GS if you are looking for something that offers good ride, low road noise and decent traction in rain and snow. I just put a set on my GS4 but I have a set on my wife's ES3 for over 1.5 years. Besides my friend in Chicago who also owns a GS4 switched to this same brand a year ago and loved the traction it provided to allow him to drive in wintery conditions over his previous factory tires. It is much quieter than the original Goodyear that came with my car. It comes with a nice rim guard, a slightly protruded rubber on the sidewall that protects your rim should you rub your tire along the curb. It's the top rated performance all seasons tire by Consumer Report in Nov 2003 beating out other named brands. I should say it's not much to look at (not as 3 dimensional with raised lettering like on Goodyears) but it is very reasonable and offers decent traction for wintery driving. I paid around $88 each for the 225/55-16VR (it' like $25 cheaper if you are willing to switch to HR instead of VR) including shipping and road hazard warranty from DiscountTireDirect (www.tire.com). TireRack doesn't carry this brand and I have not had too much luck with their recommendations. Sears sell Falkens at around $100+ each for the same tire w/ road hazard, tax, ....... Hope this helps. Let us know what you decide.
