Exclamation Need help with new Tires

Mods can you leave this here just for a little while... I am hoping to order these tonight...

I plan on getting new tires from the rack tonight for my new Salina's...

Should I go with the factory spec size or a little taller sidewall to improve comfort?

Anyone with size recomendations would be appreciated.

Factory sizes are...

Fronts - 235/40/18
Rears - 265/35/18

I plan on getting the BFGoodrich g-Force Sport which recieved good reviews for tread life, low noise, and wet/dry traction from most reviews on the site... This is mainly a price decision but nice to see that in this case few $$$ buy a decent tire.

Also, can anyone confirm if the lug on the left in the picture in this thread is the factory lug and not something L-Tuned and special...

Nice choice on the tires, the size look OK to me.
You should use the factory lug nuts cause from the look of the wheels I think I need them to hold it tight.
Hope you will like your setup!

The ideal setup for 18's is 245/40 front and 275/35 rear. I'm assuming your salina's in the rear are at least 9" wide. If not, your better off with 235 or 245 on all four rims if they are 8 or 8.5

Actually I believe the fronts are 8 and the rears are 9.5

you know about this, right? http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalcold.html

I have 245-40-18 Pirelli Pzero neros and they are comfy. I know your rears are bigger so according to my calculations, 275-35 rear and 235 40 front are your best bet. that way, the rear tire is only .1 of an inch taller than front

Actually, the 235/40 is 25.4 where as the 245/40 is 25.7 and 275/35 is 25.6. The stock tires for the
gs are 225/55/16 which is 25.7. That's why a 245/40 and 275/35 in 18's are the ideal setup

the only thing I don't like about that setup is the front tire is .1 TALLER than rear. I don't know if that is even an issue, but you'd think you'd want it the other way around

What about these sizes as compared to stock?

Tire Size Comparison

Specification Sidewall Radius Diameter Circumference Revs/Mile Difference

Stock - 225/55-16 4.9in 12.9in 25.7in 80.9in 783 0.0%

Front - 245/40-18 3.9in 12.9in 25.7in 80.8in 784 -0.1%
Rear - 285/35-18 3.9in 12.9in 25.9in 81.2in 780 0.4%

Diameter is now .2 inches taller instead of .1 shorter in rear?

However, doesn't the L-Tuned drop compensate for the .1 inch difference... I thought the official drop was 1 inch front and .9 rear for the L-Tuned shock/spring combo?

Factory L-Tuned sizes were...

Front - 235/40-18 3.7in 12.7in 25.4in 79.8in 794 -1.3%
Rear - 265/35-18 3.7in 12.7in 25.3in 79.5in 797 -1.7%

Note the rear diameter off by that .1 inch...

So maybe the 245/40-18 275/35-18 setup does make the most sense!

I personally like the 245/285 combo but I would not recommend it for daily driving/family usage unless you had at least an 8.5/10 staggered combo.

I don't get it? Why not?

And what is your vote? The sizes you were going to go with?

Because the width of the rims and the width of the tires are not optimal for a 8/9.5 245/285 setup. I know there are guys that push the limits even more and that's fine. I just personally would not do it, especially since the car is my daily and I take my family all over in it.

With wider rims (8.5/10), the tires will be more within the tolerance.

And yes, for the Salinas, my vote would be 245/275. If you are worried that it is not OEM, the GS340 Sport edition that is available in Europe comes with the Salinas and they run 245/275. This is a Lexus edition and not an "aftermarket" edition like L-Tuned/TRD.
