Default Tire question

If I change from 18" to 17" wheels will the ride be noticibly smoother?

That depends on whether you've modded the suspension as well as the tire/wheel combo you currently have on. All this comes down to the rotational mass and going to a 17" set-up in no way guarantees a smoother ride though it is probable because the mass of 17" wheels should be less.

The stock tire wheel weight from my '97 came in at 48 pounds and some odd. 225/60-16 Michelin MXV4 mounted. Knowing that, if you select a tire wheel combo that is equal or lighter, the car should feel quite close to stock. Obviously the stiffer sidewall will be a factor on an 18" wheel and a 17" gives more sidewall. Depends on your tire choices and how stiff a sidewall the tire has.

My 18" combo rides reasonably nice yet the added weight makes the suspension react more slowly. This is transmitted through the car and is obviously felt. If I could reduce the unsprung weight and reduce the rotational mass of the wheel, it would yeild a smoother ride.

What is your 18" combo and what is your proposed 17" combo?

(update) I see you have a newish LS, if you are going from the stock 18" to stock 17", yes, you will gain a smoother ride at some slight loss in turn-in feel/performance.

Usually it will because you have more sidewall you will in general get a better ride quality.
