Default Torque Spec for 18" Wheels?!?!?

OK, I'm trying to figure out the best torque spec for a set of 18" Volk wheels. I called Mackin and they wouldn't give it out b/c of "liability" issues. I think the factory spec for the stock 17s on an IS is 72 ft/lbs. I'm guessing something close to 80 should be right for 18s???

Does anyone know? I'm sure it depends on how heavy the wheels are, etc. You'd think there'd be something relatively standard for a 5 lug pattern. What do you suggest?

Thx.

Nevermind...I spoke too soon...should've checked the forum FAQ's first. It will still vary depending on the wheel but at least I'll be in the right neighborhood.

Default FAQ

I'm not sure what FAQ you looked at but the torque setting for an IS300 is 76 Ft Lbs.

Hi Brandon. Yep, I checked the IS Owner's Manual and it lists the factory torque spec at 76 ft lbs. However, checking your FAQ (Sticky), I see the spec for 14mm is 85 + (the package of lugs that came with my 18" Volks reads 14mm. What is correct?

Thx.

Default FAQ:

You mean the FAQ that Rominal posted? There might be some good information there, I'm not sure. That sticky is not The Tire Racks information. The spec I gave you is correct, 76 Ft Lbs. The factory spec should be used there is no reason that using different or larger tires and wheels would change the torque spec. There is probably nothing wrong with 86 ft lbs. but it is not the correct spec for that car. If this was a modified race or track car or drag car then there might be a reason for a change but for %99 of CL users the factory spec is correct.

while we are on the subject i have a question for you brandon. for example, on the 2nd gen GS, if you put on the stock wheels, each lug nut you can make 11 FULL turns before it starts to grab on to the wheels and need further tightening.

however, for quite a few aftermarket wheels on the GS i have seen so far already, after you put on the wheels, the lug nut goes on A LOT LESS turns than 11. for example on my hre, i can only have 3 turns in the front and 5 turns in the back. same with some volks i have seen before. is that a problem?

Good question. As long as they are engaged 6 full turns on the stud they are fine.
