Default tires size, does it matter

Please, I need some advice. I currently have a 225/55/16 on my GS400 1998. I looking to get Falken 225/60/16. Will this in anyway affect performance. I just want to move from a 55 to 60 to give me a little bit more height. Any advice....

Your speedometer will be understated.....meaning, if it says 60MPH on the speedometer, you are actually going a tad faster than 60MPH.

You should be OK. Just so you know, my OEM wheels (98 GS300) was 215/60/16. I don't know if Lexus calibrated the speedometer/odometer to your 215/55/16 since they seem to have multiple wheel/tire sizes available or if they keep it in a standard setting. If the latter, the two would be slightly off anyway.

Besides, the difference between the two tires is about 3%. When you the speedo says 60, you are actually at 62. Minor to me.

Lastly, are you sure your stock size is 215/55/16? That seems a little small. Are you going from 225/55/16 to 215/60/16? This would make more sense. The 225/55/16 gives it the "standard" stock size for the GS. The 215s will give you just a little more height. The difference between these two setups are about 1%.

225/60s will give you the height similar to people running 20s but with much ore rubber sidewall.

Is that enough info for ya?

Between these two, the 215/60 will have a little more height. If I remember correctly, the outside diameter of the 225/55 setup will give you 25.7" while the 216/60 will have and OD of 26.2".

All other things equal, a taller sidewall will give you more flexibility in the tire, a little more ground clearance, a smoother ride, more pothole / impact protection for the alloy wheels, a little less road noise, slower steering response, less G's on the skidpad, and better traction on wet /snow surfaces. However, if the car was designed for 225/55/16's, then 225/60/16's, as noted in other posts, will cause the speedometer and odometer to read a little low.

Like you, and unlike a lot of other forum members, I'm a little on the conservative side when it comes to tires...I'd rather have the ride and comfort characteristics of a higher-profile tire than the handling and quick steering response of a lower-profile one. Some of the really wide, low-profile ones with 30 and 35-series heights like on the Viper, Porsche GT2, etc.... are just absurd in their ride harshness.

Default 225/60

The 225/60 16 is 1 inch taller then the 225/55 16. It will probably work without rubbing, and will offer a better ride quality, but not be as responsive. It will throw the speedo and odo off.

That's a great question!

I know for a fact that the GS series came with 3 wheel/tire choices:
GS300s get 215/60 - 16
GS400s get 225/55 - 16
Optional 17" wheels (for both GS300s & GS400s) are fitted with 235/45 - 17

Now, the 17" wheels is a dealer option. Just say you were to buy a new GS300 and decide that you want to pay for the 17" wheels, now will the dealer recalibrate your speedometer for you BEFORE you take delivery of the car?

I recently upgrade from 225/55-16s that came with my GS to the OEM 17" wheels (235/45-17). When I compared them side to side, it seems like the 16" wheels are about 3/4" taller than the 17" wheels.

Was my car originally calibrated for the 16" wheels from the factory? If so, that means my speedometer is slightly off....when it shows 60MPH on my speedometer, I'm actually going a tad slower than 60MPH.

Not that it really matters, but does anyone have any insight on how Lexus calibrates the speedometer?
