Default Confirmed: 245/40/20 doesn't fit!!

Went to throw on my 20's off my old rx300 (20x8.5 with +38 offset) onto my new 98 GS400 and the tires are just barely too big. Tried to get around that by using a small spacer and the lugs aren't long enough to accomodate. Just thought I'ld confirm this for those who might be wondering. Looks like I need to sell some 1000 mile old tires.... Anyone running this offset? I think I remember reading the correct size would be 245/35/20 right? What a difference 5mm makes, huh....

haha couple of things, 245/40/20 for sure won't work, way too big

yes if you want, get 245/35/20

offset is good, would work no problem

that's not 5mm difference, that's 5% difference, it's aspect ratio not actual dimension, so we are talking about 5% of 245, so we are talking about over 12mm here

its so funny, I try to get people to understand that all the time. Someone will tell me, "I dont want 20s, because I want more tire. So I'm going to get 19" wheels with a 235/35-19". And I'll tell them you are going to have LESS tire than me, since I my sidewall is 35% of 245 and yours will be 35% of 235. Not really hard to figure out whats bigger!

My grandfather has a 04 S500 Sport and man it took me about 20minutes to talk him into it, he was scared of the staggered 18s. He kept saying, "No, that 40 tire is too small, its gonna be like your Honda was!!!" LOL I'm like no pop, the first number on yours will be a helluva lot bigger than on my Honda!!! LOL

No he doesnt, but he's a pretty sharp guy, I just told him the tire size is an equation, so do the math. he understood perfectly from then on.

BTW, he is in LOVE with the new car, he had a 01 S500 base, and traded it in for the 04 S500 sport, if you ask him his thoughts on the switch, the first thing he mentions are the tires!! Its always something like "man, that thing sure does sit in the road nice" and "must be those tires, cause this thing can handle".

Funny as heck coming from a 71yr old! LOL
