Default shaking at 55 and above

my car shakes sometimes at 55 and above, its not all the time though its depends on the surface and slope to the side of the road.....i was wondering if the problem would be alignment or just an unbalanced tire?.....i hit something a couple weeks ago from some dumb-***'s truck who didnt care to tie it down

You may have lost a magnet when you hit that debris, so you'd need to get your tired re-balanced. That would be my guess. If it were the alignment the car would pull to one side no matter what speed you were going. Just my opinion though.

It's most likely your front tires. The rear tires don't cause as much shaking as the fronts.

Have both fronts looked at. It doesn't cost that much to balance them anyway. $10 each?

SC300ES is right. Balancing in the fronts is more needed than in the rear set. I'd pay to do just the fronts first, and if shaking still appears, then do the rears. Balancing at my local tire shop is about $11 per tire, and you can also get it done at Sears, Costco, etc.

Cool

Agreed! it's best to try the easiest possible problems to eliminate the cause. It is possible that it could be a combination of balancing & alignment should you still feel a problem thru the steering wheel. Let us know.

If you look very closely on the outside and 'inside' rim edges, you can usually tell if a wheel weight has fallen off because the rim is generally shinier in that spot, and frequently outlined ever-so-slightly with very thin line of dirt.

Correct. Start with the simple fixes first, then go for the more complicated ones if those don't work. Drop the $20 at a tire shop for them to balance the fronts and hopefully this solves the shaking issue. Good luck.
