I wanted to get a thread running on the Base car tires-SP5000m, mud and snow from Dunlop.As these tires were shipped from Japan-they don't seem to be sold here and are different from the standard SP5000 sold in the US-which seem to better rated (tirerack). Seems like they're quiet most of the time and track well in the freeways but do not give "assurance" at the turns. Why didn't they choose something better?

Anybody with a better tire idea?

Nokian WR all-season tires with a heavy winter bias. I have 'em and they are GREAT. I can't tell you yet how well they'll wear, however, but the Dunlops don't last that long to begin with as a comparsion anyway.

These Dunlops are factory for the '03 as well. I didn't have any complaints about them until this weekend. This weekend has been the first time I've driven the car in heavy rain. These tires hydroplane way too easily and will be replaced by Yokohamas or Michelins when they wear out.
