You might want to give some more details about how you drive. Since your in San Jose, I assume you don't worry about snow... but do you drive agressively? Want it to be a quiet tire? Long life? Rain / water issues where you live?

Might get a more focused response if you give a bit more detail

I drive fast but not too aggresively.
The car now has Goodyear GT+4 OEM 225/55/16and I find the tire to be bad in both dry and wet traction.
I am looking for a comfortable and quiet tire that has good dry and decent wet traction.
I checked tire rack and the tire I am considering are

Contenial ContiExtreme Contact
Yokohama AVS db S2
Dunlop SP 5000
Goodyear F1 GS-D3

Any other recommendations are welcome. Thanks!

Since you're looking at new tires for your 16", 245x50x16s have almost exactly the same diameter as the OEM 225x55x16s and I think they'll work ok on wheels that are at least 7" wide. That will give you a beefier look and feel.

I've have a few tires on my SC and so far the Dunlop SP Sport 5000's I have right now give me a pretty nice ride and handling is nice. They're smooth and quite (at least till you hit rough roads like around where I live) but over all the perfemance on these Z rated tires are great. I'd go with him but the price can be steep if you dont shop around.

Kschiu- see the following thread for a pic of the very tire jimmit mentions in the very size that George mentions on the very car you mention:

That tire looks great. It looks like it might be the 5000 AS, currently $115 each at Tirerack. The summer 5000 is $151.

One word of caution here. The later SC 5-spoke wheels (97 or 98-00) are only 6 1/2" wide. Some tire manufacturers (e.g., Michelin) say the minimum width for 245/50/16s is 7". Dunlop says 6 1/2" is the minimum for the 5000 in this size.

Thanks a lot for the recommendations. I think it is a good idea to go 245/50/16 my wheel is the 7 spoke 16x7 so it should be OK rim wise. However would it rub with this size? Anybsoy had try this out.

Read the post that Perry attached. It talks about rubbing.

Default which tire

I have tried lots of tires. I agree about the Yoko AVS db s2 being pretty good. For more aggressive looks and still quiet ride, the Yoko AVS ES100 are also good. After 15 years of using performance tires, I'd say the best tire I've ever had are Michelins.

Thanks Brandon. What is the down side besides price going for 245/50 16?
Harsher ride? Should get slightly better traction right?
