Default why not 245/40/19?

I notice that 19 inchers in this forum go with a 35 or 30 tire. My question is why cant i use a 245/40/19 tire

on a 19x8.5 rim? I dont feel that 30 or 35 is sufficient cushion/protection for the wheels. I live in a city

where there are potholes and nasty bumps on the highway.. and dont feel like repairing rims every week.. =)

Please shed some light on this issue. I tried searching but could not find anything.

Thanks

i think you can go with a 40 profiule it does just slightl change the rolling diameter but not much.

i will be going with 245/40/20 and 274/35/20 on my GS with my new Symbolic Wheels 20" 3 piece chrome.

Peace,

Ted

35 front and 30 back with 19's aren't as bad as you think. i live in nyc and the potholes here are no doubt worse than where you live. 40 profile will probably cause rubbing issues, also imo i don't think they look as nice as lower profile tires.

so you saying that u hit a few potholes with 35 fr and 30 rr and ur rims are not bent? or cracked?

why rubbing? what if the car is only lowered slightly? because the 40 profile will better fill in the gap wont it? doesnt rubbing occur more because of a low #'d offset?

I live in Ontario, Canada.. =)

ok, you CAN use 245/40/19 and 275/35/19 on the GS, coz' that's just the same diameter as getting 20s with 245/35/20 and 275/30/20. the ride would be a lot better and will probably protect the rims more. however 35 and 30 in 19 isn't that bad. i have had that for so long, hit 3 potholes before and the wheels are still strong. it's all about how careful you drive and how much pressure you put in. if you put in 32psi, even with 40 and 35 you are going to kill it anyway. with 40+psi you have better protection.

and like i said, 245/40/20 and 275/35/20 just won't work. it's like putting 21s on the GS. bad idea. rubbing has to do with a lot of stuff, offset, tiresize, etc...

Default Overall Diameter

The stock OD for that car is 25.7 inches the correct 19 inch size should have the same OD. That is the reason for the 35 series. The 245 40 series will work on that car though, it will just throw of the speedo.

Sorry I don't have time now to pull out the old tire size calculator but if you are pretty close to the stock diameter with the 40, then you should be OK. I think Bitkahuna is running this "fat" setup and he likes it. PM him if you have questions.

I'd have to say 40 all around. Usually people go to 35 series in the back if they have staggered wheels and the rears are like 275. The 35 balances out the extra width so that the OD stays the same as the fronts.

if you have 8.5 all around, get 245/40/19 all around. i was talking about staggered setup

Brandon @ tiure Rack: I don;t want to hijack the thread but you said 245/40 would be Ok.

does this apply to 245/40/20 and also 275/35/20?

I just needt o know if these sizes will lwork. I realize that the speedometer may be off a little.

what offset should I use for the wheels? 20X8.5 and 20X9.5

Thansk for th help.

Ted

no it's not. 245/40/19 and 245/40/20 are totally different tires, the 245/40/20 is exactly 1" bigger in diameter

for 8.5, i guess offset around +35 is safe. for the rear, +38 is what i have

Romini, im planning to go with +35 offset all around.. because that is the highest the rim manufacturer has.. will i still be ok? or should i go with a rim that is higher offset like a 40 or 45?

MY main concern is excessive rubbing. I dont mind rubs during speedbumps but other than that im pretty iffy..

bottom line, please let me know if i would be ok with rubbing issue with a 19x8.5 rim with 245/40/19 and +35mm offset all around.?

Thanks again the fine folks at clublexus!!!

i suppose you are getting 19x8.5 all around, right? if that's the case, i think +35 should be ok. it's definitely ok at the back. i have 9.5 +38 so 8.5 +35 is actually less aggressive. front i think it should be ok too. i heard that even +32 will work, andi think i have +38 now and i still have quite some space. so you should be good
