I'm not on the forum as much anymore (fatherhood rocks!) but good to see Joey keeping the soccer stuff active. ha ha
I picked Brazil to win it all figuring home soil would give them an advantage but they never quite hit their stride and their meltdown solidified I was going to lose the pools I was in. (I ended up 2nd in them.) Brazil's strikers (Fred and Jo) were dreadful and even though Hulk had a couple good games he was disappointing as well. I cannot for the life of me understand how David Luiz and Tiago Silva are two of the most expensive center backs ever and Brazil's defense looked so dismal. No structure, no discipline, and seemingly no real leadership in the critical moments. Sigh....
As an Arsenal fan I had to root for Germany in the final because of Arsenal's German contingent (Podolski, Mertesaker, Ozil, as well as Gnabry & Eisfeld.) Germany winning in Brazil is HUGE. Brazilians appreciate that Argentina didn't win. LOL
Hard luck to Messi who is an amazing talent, has won everything there is to win EXCEPT the WC, and will always have that hanging over his head until he does. At 27 he realistically has another shot at it but things just do not click for him with Argentina as they do with Barca.
The US has A LOT of work to do. Klinsmann gets a pass because we got the results they needed, advanced, and really played our hearts out but a country our size should have so many options and players to choose from. Klinsmann saying, "we needed a bit of luck" should not go unchallenged. "Luck" isn't a strategy, game plan, or tactic. Tim Howard saved us from embarrassment but we clearly lacked the composure and leadership to see out a win (i.e. against Portugal), and we were really exposed against Belgium. There is some new promising talent that give us building blocks but we've got work to do for sure.
Great World Cup overall though. Mostly entertaining games, the controversies, unexpected demise and end of Spain's reign, Brazil's self-destruction, Costa Rica's rise to represent CONCACAF the best, Argentina missing their HUGE change to solidify Messi's legacy, and Germany being the only European team to win on South American soil. The beautiful game didn't disappoint.
It's the crest on the chest not the name on the back. RIP RvP
