2014 Olympic Hockey - Sochi - Predictions and Discussion

Hi All,
The Olympic hockey rosters are set and the tournament gets underway around February 12. I am hoping the US wins Gold in the men's tournament. They came so close in 2010. I also hope Jonathan Quick gets the starting job for the men's team. I think he deserves it, but I am biased. He'll also likely get enough scoring punch that he won't have to shut the other team out to win games.

Predictions/Impressions/Thoughts?

Thanks for making this. I thought about making an olympics thread but then realized I only care really for the hockey portion lol.

I actually I agree, I think Quick should be in goal. Never really been a fan of Howard and Miller seems to have lost some stock as of late.

Happy that Pavelski made the US team from the Sharks

Canada is stacked as ever this year

I'm a huge Winter Olympics fan! The Gold will be won through Canada or Russia. While I hope the US does well, I don't think they have the top end talent BUT Miracles do happen and we'd certainly know something about that!

Quick or Miller get the nod, IMO. I think Quick is #1 right now because he seems "fresher;" maybe some of the injury time off was a blessing in disguise for him...? It's hard to compare Miller and Quick in terms of overall number because the teams they play behind are very different!

The Olympics are here!

I am biased, but I like Quick as a starter, too. I am not sure if Ryan Miller losing some of his luster is because he's behind a pretty bad team now or if he really has fallen off. I am not a huge Howard fan either. Quick has made some pretty astonishing saves lately even though his GAA numbers went up some. The Kings had been that bad, but finally got one last night.

I want the US to win Gold, of course. I was disappointed they didn't win it in 2010 and almost angry it was Crosby who scored the OT game winner.

Similar to the Sharks, Kings defense has waivered a bit and offensive has stalled. Goalies no matter how good can only do so much. The rest of the team has to step up

I think a good number of people feel the same way about this. Mainly in part to his ties with the NHL

I'll partially disagree with this. In a tournament situation, or playoffs for that matter, a team can ride a hot goalie. Over the course of a full season that is not the case, but in a setting like the Olympics it could happen. Now for the partial part of my statement; he needs his team to score at least ONE goal to have any chance of winning.

Forsure. Look at Scrivens stopping all 59 shots. He was a wall and there was no getting one past that night. Regardless of Regular or OT/SO yes, the team has to score at least one goal

"G" didn't make Team Canada even when Stamkos was scratched so I'm pulling for Finland.

Quick was announced as the starter in net for the USA vs. Slovakia tomorrow. The game is on at 4:30 am local time for me, so the DVR is set. It's gonna be tough to avoid spoilers all day. I saw some chatter on Sportsline saying Quick is average and Miller should get the start. If you only look at Quick's GAA and Save % and ignore how poorly the Kings have been playing, it would be easy to draw that conclusion> He has made some incredible save and kept the Kings in games. I expect he'll be sharp for Team USA.

That's good news. As to Quick's stats, they don't tell the whole story. Similar to the Sharks and Nemo. When the offense can't get going then you have to rely on the defense and when that fails well.. that explains the skid! lol excited to watch this though!

Third times a charm too. I didn't realize USA had lost twice in a row to Slovakia in past games. This is a great start

Quick is getting the start against Russia! Should be a great game - debating whether or not I want to wake up at 4am and watch it live... Watching Slovakia vs Slovenia right now.
