About 250,000 people are expected to flock to downtown Dallas for tomorrow's parade to celebrate the Mavericks' first NBA championship.
Below are details (and recommendations from organizers) on the event, and an invite to join us for live updates and a chat during the parade.
People are encouraged to arrive early, but to not camp out overnight (it's actually against city ordinance).
Schedule of events:
Street closures will begin at approximately 8:00 a.m.
Parade will start at 10:00 a.m. and end at approximately 11:00 a.m.
Celebration at the American Airlines Center from 12:30 p.m. and end approximately at 1:30 p.m.
Temperatures are expected to be in the 90s
by the time to parade starts.
From the City of Dallas: The possibility of heat exhaustion should be taken very seriously. Fire rescue will be stationed around the parade for this purpose, but visitors are strongly encouraged to keep themselves hydrated at all times. Alcohol is discouraged, as the fluid itself tends to dehydrate the body. Light weighted, light colored, and loose clothing is recommended and sunblock will most likely be necessary as well. Fire Eddie Chief Burns has also suggested using the buddy system so attendees can keep an eye on one another. According to Burns, the Mavericks have also sought out a vendor to provide water throughout the course of the parade.
Street closures and DART:
An event of this size will require significant street closures (click here for a list) to maintain public safety. Leave early; your preferred route may be closed when you arrive. Have a secondary plan. Again, it is encouraged that you use public transportation if possible.
