Too bad they couldn't beat Barca in either of the Champions League legs, coudn't beat them in La Liga, and will lose the league title to Barca as well.
The galactico concept was never my favorite but I liked Real Madrid in the Zidane days. Not so much anymore. As talented as they are they rely too much on Ronaldo who is selfish and a cry-baby. I think Kaka will likely leave Madrid and go back to Italy. Benzema would be better on another team as well.

Barca are on another level. VERY impressive team and fun to watch the way they work together and for each other on and off the ball. I thought Man U had a chance this time around but Barca made them look average at times.

Easy win today for Spain vs USA in a international friendly on US soil.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_69Wk...&feature=feedu

Quote:
USA 0-4 Spain: Goals from Cazorla, Negredo and Torres provide easy win for World Champions

Del Bosque’s side continue their fine form with a comprehensive victory over the USA thanks to three first half strikes

By Daniel Quinton-Navarro
Spain recorded an emphatic 4-0 victory over the USA thanks to a blistering first half appearance.
A Santiago Cazorla brace, either side of Alvaro Negredo’s fine strike in the opening 45 minutes dispelled any repeat of the American’s heroics in the semi-finals for the Confederations Cup.

Fernando Torres completed the scoring in the second half, leaving the USA in turmoil ahead of the Gold Cup tournament.

Spain had the better of the opening exchanges and they nearly opened the scoring when Alvaro Negredo clipped the underside of the bar with a delightful lob.

The woodwork was rattled soon after when David Villa curled a shot against the upright following a devastating counter attack.

Spain took a deserved led after 28 minutes following a wonderful passing move climaxing in David Silva squaring the ball to Santiago Cazorla who tucked the ball inside the near post.

Negredo doubled the Spaniard’s lead with a fine finish after Xabi Alonso’s chipped pass put the Sevilla man clean through.

Spain launched another counter as David Silva delivered a low cross which found Cazorla coming in from deep to slide the ball beyond Tim Howard.

In contrast to Spain’s supremacy, America’s only chance came from Gerard Pique’s mistake allowing Robbie Rogers a site of goal but the Columbus Crew player couldn’t hit the target.

Half-time brought about the numerous substitutions as the USA replaced five players in preparation for their Gold Cup tie against Canada, to Spain’s three.

America began to threaten Jose Reina’s goal in the second half; but Chris Wondolowski was unable to reach a high cross into the area and Clint Dempsey dragged a shot wide of the target ten minutes into the second half.

Spain were celebrating a fourth goal as substitutes Borja Valero and Torres combined with the Chelsea man taking the ball in his stride and poking it beyond Tim Howard.

The remainder of the game closed out with neither side pushing forward with the USA retaining energy for the Gold Cup.

The Americans face Canada in their opening match on Wednesday, whilst Spain return to the friendly format against Venezuela.

That US team gave a horrible display. Obviously they didn't field their strongest players with the Gold Cup starting for them today but the guys out there should have done MUCH better than they did. The first half was like a scrimmage for Spain as the US did very little to close down space, marking was non-existent, there was no creativity in attack. Just horrible all around. Considering they beat a strong Spain team in the Confederations cup a couple years ago fans at least expected a decent game but got nothing for their expectations.
The US should do a lot better against lesser competition in the Gold Cup starting tonight though. They have Canada tonight, Panama on Saturday, and Guadeloupe on Tuesday. They should win this group.

CONCACAF Gold Cup
USA opening match of the Gold Cup-Group C
USA 2-0 CANADA
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H-gkr9KwrXw
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=87M4A92GEK4

Quote:
Jozy Altidore punctuated a confidence-building performance with a goal and an assist, Tim Howard came up big at the end, and the U.S. national team put last weekend's fiasco against Spain behind them with an impressive start to the CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Altidore scored from a Landon Donovan pass in the first half and set up Clint Dempsey in the second of a 2-0 Group C triumph over Canada in Detroit.

Coupled with an at-times scintillating doubleheader opener, in which Panama held off 10-man Guadeloupe, 3-2, it made for the best day yet in the region's nations championship.

A quick look at the third day of group play:

BACK IN STRIDE: The U.S., so out of sorts against the masterful Spaniards (in everything from lineup to tactics to inability to compete), looked like a title-game shoo-in against a game Canadian side, dominating throughout to take charge in Group C.

Altidore, whose effectiveness with the national team has been in question, gave a superb performance -- especially holding the ball in deep positions -- marked by expert work on both goals. The first, after collecting a 30-yard Donovan pass that split three defenders, should have been handled by Canadian goalkeeper Lars Hirschfeld, but Dempsey's sliding finish from a tight angle on the second was impeccable.

Howard made two big saves off a long throw-in in the 85th minute to preserve the shutout. After knocking the ball from Simeon Jackson's feet, he knocked aside Ali Gerba's rebound. Seconds later, he made a stunning stop on a close-range volley by Gerba.

High marks also to midfielder Michael Bradley, who was active and dangerous, and to Donovan, who did well linking teammates and creating opportunities.

Next up: a showdown Saturday in Tampa against Panama for the group title.

PANAMA'S TIME: The biggest in the first go-round of group games might also have been the best, with Panama using a vital 10-minute stretch of the first half to claim a significant victory en route to the knockout stage.

Luis Tejada fed MLS target Blas Perez in the 29th minute and doubled the advantage in the 32nd, and the Caribbean side appeared finished when Mickael Tacalfred stamped on Luis Henriquez and was sent off in the 38th.

A penalty kick early in the second half made it 3-0, but Guadeloupe, looking to at least match its semifinal run four years ago, charged back behind Brice Jovial, who came off the bench to tally in the 65th and 79th.

C is the most balanced of the Gold Cup groups, after the U.S. -- Panama, Guadeloupe and Canada are all capable of being No. 2 (and two of the three third-place teams also move on) -- and every result is magnified as a result.

DAY 4 HIGHLIGHT: No games. DAY 5: Mexico and Costa Rica look to build on blowout wins en route to their showdown Sunday at Soldier Field.

Mexico rallies to beat USA in Gold Cup final

LOS ANGELES, California (AFP) Mexico won a sixth CONCACAF Gold Cup title by rallying to score four unanswered goals and defeat the United States 4-2 in championship game at the Rose Bowl stadium.

Pablo Barrera scored his second goal of the game in the 50th minute to break a 2-2 deadlock and Giovani Dos Santos added an insurance goal in the 76th minute for the Mexicans, who trailed 2-0 after only 23 minutes.

"There's no better moment than victory," Mexico coach Jose Manuel de la Torre said. "Everything else is in the past now."

Mexico on Saturday won their second title in a row in the biennial North American regional tournament, defeating the United States in the final as they did in 2009, and qualified for the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup.

Mexico's Javier Hernandez, who plays for Manchester United in the English Premier League, was named the Gold Cup Most Valuable Player. Hernandez led this year's tournament with seven goals.

Mexico and the US team have won 10 of the 11 Gold Cups contested since the tournament took its current form in 1991.

Dos Santos netted one of the prettiest goals of the tournament, dancing around US goalkeeper Tim Howard, who had charged out of his net after a loose ball, then spun past two stunned defenders and chipped the ball over a leaping Eric Lichaj into the upper right corner of the net.

The Americans played well defensively in the tournament until they came up against the explosive Mexican attack. American captain Carlos Bocanegra said there was confusion among the US defenders Saturday.

"It was an overall frustrating night," Bocanegra said. "Defensively we weren't good enough."

A sold-out crowd of 93,420 at the Rose Bowl was the largest ever for a Gold Cup game in the USA. The pro-Mexican crowd was clad mainly in green and cheering loudly for the visitors despite the match being played on US soil.

American fans tried to get chants of "USA, USA" going in the first half but they were quickly drowned out by the "El Tri" supporters with a chorus of "Ole, Ole".

Michael Bradley scored in the eighth minute and Landon Donovan added another goal in the 23rd minute as the Americans jumped out to a 2-0 lead. Donovan's goal was his 13th in Gold Cup play, giving him the all-time tournament lead.

"You're worried and you don't want to become disorganized," de la Torre said. "The United States was playing well. They surprised us with the first goal. We pushed too far up in the second goal. Fortunately, we were able to maintain our calm."

Barrera then scored his first goal in the 29th minute and Andres Guardado, who was playing with an injured left ankle, netted the equalizer in the 36th minute, setting the stage for a second half dominated by the Mexican squad.

Barrera put his 17-yard shot just inside the right post to snap Howard's tournament shutout streak at 351 minutes.

Guardado tied it by pouncing on a loose ball about five yards out to tie after Dos Santos started the play with a pass from the right side that bounced off Lichaj.

"Our back line couldn't figure it out," Bocanegra said. "They spread us out and we weren't all on the same page."

I've tried to give Bradley the benefit of the doubt but it's time the US gets a new coach. Bradley has generally done well overall but the team didn't play up to their potential this tourney, they didn't win their group like they should have, and completely blew the final. You shouldn't lose a two goal lead in a final. PERIOD!

The backline was all over the place defensively and rarely on the same page. The team defensive strategy to protect a two goal lead was non-existent. EVERYBODY and their mother knows this is THE rivalry matchup for us so to lose it under those circumstances signals some REAL changes in leadership need to be made. The one thing I'll give Bradley credit for is FINALLY bringing Freddy Adu into the squad in the semi-final game and then rolling with him in the final since he proved his worth helping to break the deadlock in the semi. Outside of that, thanks for your contribution but now it's time for you to move on so the U.S. team can move forward.
Credit to Mexico for a deserved win but it's a bitter pill to swallow when you watch the U.S. give it up a like a cheap crack ***** needing a fix...

My wife's a huge fan, so we were watching. I don't even like soccer & I was hooked during that match. I don't know the last time I've seen a match that stressful in any sport.

I only saw the end of the second half and the PKs but that was ENOUGH. So much drama packed into that game and it's great to see the U.S. women prevail after potentially being robbed. I could accept the red card on the tackle (even though it was arguable) but to erase the initial saved PK was harsh. The keeper didn't move and slight encroachment like what happened occurs all the time without being called. So, to go from the rush of having saved a PK only to immediately have another rewarded and Brazil convert on it was deflating. That made the U.S. comeback that much more special.
I hope exciting and dramatic games like this capture more of an audience for the women so interest in their league will continue to grow.
