The death penalty may not curb the murder rate, but I bet it would curb the rape, theft, DUI and other crimes if people knew they would die if convicted of such crime. Remember though, I believe deal is a humane and easy punishment. Getting sent to jail for life where you will be beaten, sexually assaulted, possibly killed is a much more cruel punishment IMHO.

Criminals don't think this way. If they considered the punishment, they'd never do the crimes. The death penalty is not and has never been a deterrent. The death penalty is a way of ensuring this criminal never gets the opportunity to breed. At least that was the idea originally because agrarian societies fully understand the implications of allowing an animal with a bad temperament to breed. On the farm we have an expression - kill it quick before it breeds. We surely don't want another one like that one.
We've wandered far from this fundamental concept over time. People believing the death penalty actually prevents crimes just don't understand criminals.

Most performance mods need a watch and timed course to demonstrate actual improvement. Few deliver the advertised claims. Many are actually worse than stock. The best performance mods are made to the driver.

You've made your own argument invalid. The reason the death penalty isn't a deterrent right now is because we've wandered far from the fundamental concept. You screw up, we whack you. It's absolutely a deterrent - when applied correctly. As it sits right now, it's not doing crap. If they didn't allow so many appeals and moved from death row to death express lane, we'd be far better off.

I think it is a travesty that all these kids were spectators to such a brutal crime (even if she was drunk or high and went into an alley she did not deserve a beating and gang rape) and no one tried to stop it. I assume they were probably cheering it on and would have participated if they thought they would not be caught
Personally I would like to see all the perpetrators thrown in jail and but1-raped for years as well as the spectators who let this crime continue for hours.
Unfortunately it is not against the law to not help or call the police when someone is in peril unless you put that person in peril. Courts have struck down laws requiring bystanders to call the police when someone needs help because it places a legal burden on people through no fault of their own.
Therefore this is a moral issue and because of the degradation of morals that has been occurring over the last few decades I suspect it will continue and probably get worse.
I am scared to put my kid in public school that is why I am considering a private (and most likely religious) school so he can learn value, honesty, integrity, empathy, duty, etc. that is so lacking these days.

A 15-year-old girl leaving early from the homecoming dance at Richmond High School was enticed into a darkened alley just off campus to hang out with as many as a dozen young men who were drinking.
When the girl joined in and became drunk herself, police say, the men attacked her.
One after another, as many as six men raped the girl, police said Monday. Others watched. For more than two hours, no one tried to stop the attacks, and no one called police.

Once again, alcohol shows its evil, particularly with young people. This is a perfect example why alcohol is off-limits to people under 18-21, and why we have laws against public drunkennness, no matter what the age (we don't know how old the guys were, except for 19-year-old Ortega). None of this probably would have happened if she....and the young men.......had not been drinking.
Of course, that doesn't excuse what the guys did, drunk or sober...they are guilty of mass sexual assault either way. But the point is.....too much alcohol is bad at any age; it is especially deadly with young, immature people.
Of course, all teens make mistakes......that is a part of growing up. I hope she learned from this one, and my hopes and prayers go out for her recovery.

if she was seriously intoxicated, i wonder if they didn't slip her some other drug in a drink.
horrible. her life will never be the same... i hope the lives of the offenders will be equally devastated.

Probably from a guy that she "trusted" coaxed her to go down there and hangout. He may or may not have known what was going to go down.

i say poor judgment on her part.. so it makes her partly responsible for this tragic event.
which also leads to poor parenting skills from the parent.. she shouldnt be drinking in the first place
shoot the rapers and slap the parents for not teaching the daughter better..
just me.

Death penalty != deterrent.

Need to bring back public execution, and the laws need to change where if you get the death penalty you are put to death quickly. In a matter of weeks or days, not years. The should also let the victim decide weather the person lives or dies in a deal penalty case. Let the offender feel what it is like to have no control and be powerless by the victim. Death is an easy and humane punishment compared to life in prison.
I guarantee you if I were thinking about committing a crime and I saw an offender lined up against a brick wall while the victim gives the word to fire, I would never think about it again.
