Default What hours do you work?

I'm very lucky in my current situation. I'm a software developer, and I can work from home as needed. Or duck out early, or come in late as well.

I typically work 5 days a week, 8-5 in the office (about 15-20 minute drive). But with a 4 month old, sometimes things come up, and I have to be able to work from home. Like tomorrow, my parents who normally make a 30 minute drive to babysit 2-3 days a week are probably going to be running late due to snow. Going to work from my couch for a couple hours until they get in, and then head to the office for the rest of the day.

The trade off is that I occasionally have to work after hours. My company has first and second shifts, plus some over seas operations. Plus, on weekends like this one, I had to spend an hour or 2 publishing our latest software release and making a few fixes. So easily putting in more than 40 hours on a normal week, and 50+ on weeks where there's more work to be done.

That's a trade off I'll take though to be able to work from home and work shorter hours during the week when it's needed. I'm just hoping I survive some of the outsourcing that's been happening...

15-16 hours Mon-Thurs, 12 on Friday, another 12 over the course of the weekend (mostly Saturday). My roughly 1.5 hour roundtrip commute is included in the Mon-Fri figures, since I use that time to catch up on work-related podcasts.

Work is highly overrated.

Taking college courses is hard enough...

College is easy. It is just that with work you can relax on the weekends, but with school there is always homework or exams coming up to study for.

College was more stressful for me. I still have nightmares of exams and it's been about 8 years since I had my last one.

I received my first college degree back in 1987.

Worked for 25 years with Ma Bell and retired in 2012. Only schooling during those years was technical training from the company.

After retiring, school was easier at first because I was taking art classes last year. I changed my major and am now trying to get a personal training certificate from my college.

Not as easy as art classes, that's for sure.

For years, while working for the phone company, I had nightmares that I missed a half semester of classes, or missed a test, or forgot to do my homework, etc.

I'm back in school, but I never have any of those dreams anymore. Go figure.

My wife is a full time RN, working 3 x 12-13 hour shifts, working a part time job teaching classes, a full time mom to a 4 month old, and going to school to get her 3rd degree.

That must be common, because I have the same nightmares. Mostly about high school.

Although I did blow off most of my classes then and in my first year of college in real life. Quickly learned it's harder to not go to class and still get A's in college than high school...

Well, I'm also Mr. Mom. I get my daughter out the door in the AM for school and I taxi her around to various places she needs to be.

I'm busy, but nowhere near the extent your wife seems to be. God bless her for coping with all that she does.

My company is really un-stressful. I do the 9-5:30 but it's flexible. No weekend work. I leave early if I'm done or stay late if I feel like I need it. Just gotta meet deadlines.
