"Beckon call" or "beck and call"?
i had this discussion earlier tonight and i thought i would ask some of the more informed and well-read brethren (and sistren) of CL. which is it? in most of the examples that i have read, they use beckon call. but to beck is to motion or summon, so theoretically it could be beck and call. i know, i know........this is stupid. but humor me.........

websters says that beckon means to summon or signal most typically with a wave or nod........
so i guess it could be both......but i was always under the impression that the phrase was two words.....
so ill go with "beckon call"

The phrase is "beck and call", as in "325 lb-ft of torque is at my beck and call." I think it dates to Elizabethan period English, but could be even earlier/older.
But I still can't figure how they get those ships in those bottles...................

Beck and Call
Here's an explanation:
http://www.word-detective.com/100699.html#beckandcall
Reminds me of a conversation years ago with a friend.
His take: "Various assundry" things
I explained that it could be "various sundry" or "various and sundry", but there was no "assundry".
I dig etymology. I am a bent individual.

"smilin' mighty jesus" = spinal meningitis
"sick-as-hell anemia" = sickle cell anemia

Mr J, we'll have to set up a game sometime. I'm only so-so, but like to play. More original UT than 2003 still.
