If 482(9+3) = 48 over 2(12) then it becomes 48 over 24 right? Let's just say I have 48 bananas and I have 24 Oranges. Exactly how many "times" more do I have bananas than oranges? The answer is 2. What's your take on this?
Lol did you read the thread at all? It's only 48 over 2(12) if the equation is written 48/[(2(9+3)]. There are no brackets after the division sign so you can't say that it's 48 over everything else. You need to use the order of operations. 48/2(12) = 24(12) = 288.

edit: some guy on another forum was convinced the answer was 2 and emailed his calculus teacher so he could post the response and prove he was right. The calc teacher said 288

I bet someone can get a math professor to say its 2 and not 288, and refute above post lol

it's true that since multiplication and division are equal in precedence therefore they're taken as they come.

so 48/2*(9+3) means you do the 48/2 first, which is 24, then multiple 24 by (9+3) and you get 288.

the confusion may also come from algebra experience (although there's no unknowns in this formula), where one typically expands the brackets/terms first making it seem like:

48 / ((2 x 9 + 2 x 3))

anyway, although i can still see it as 'over', i'll concede the right answer is 288.

in other news, i don't care.

Imagine if these same people were the ones programming the daily interest rate algorithms on your accounts.
Glad this is done.

Exactly, a math debate is not worthy, but posts about stupid crap is

I did this thing like 10x, asked someone with a math degree from U of M, keep coming with with 288.......
