Default google android phones - coming on strong!

this article says android phones will overtake iphone in popularity in a couple of years.

i can certainly believe it if apple stays locked into at&t only.

for those that have an android based phone, what do you like, not like about it?

isn't Apple's exclusive contract with AT&T supposed to end soon?

I hear good and bad things about the G1 ... bad battery life, but other than that, it's the new sidekick but way better. Hah. Isn't the G2 coming out?

Isn't the Android phones stuck with T-Mobile?

I currently have the T-Mobile G1, and am very happy with it. Besides the bad battery life, the phone is amazing, with a lot of functions and apps available.

Currently, the Android OS is very capable, but doesn't have the hardware to keep up with it. Both the G1 and the myTouch 3G are lacking in RAM and processor speed.

I was very close in buying the HTC Hero, but changed my mind after the Nokia N900 got announced. New OS which is called Maemo 5. Can't wait! will be released this month.

I would get the the Google phone. If there is more processing power, memory and space for apps/music. Also IF Google Voice goes active in Canada.

I would only hop back into the android OS once there 1GHz of proccessing speed, over 512/512mb. Without that i would not go back to that os.

Its very capable, but google takes to long to release software updates. After what 1.5 years, they released a update to finally fix the horrid app store. The execution has been way off. The payment part of the market store was painfully wack.

If you wanted to see an app, you would have to buy it(no screenshots) and if you didnt like you would have to email the developer for a refund. PITA. But that is slowly changing

I like my G1. I like having the qwerty keyboard. I don't use much of the virtual keyboard. I like having that physical touch. :P That's matter of opinion though. But besides that I'm a little bias because I like the openness of Android. It's really hard to explain what I mean if you aren't an open-source type of dude like me :P I'm a developer and currently developing an app for the Android based phones relating to music . "DLP" just remember that when it comes out haha.

The battery life does suck lol. Compare to other phones, it weighs a little more. But that doesn't bother me. Since I'm a nerd, I use it as developing tool bouncing, testing, and debugging ideas on our phone between my friends that are developers as well. The app store isn't that great lol But they're working on it. They haven't been around as long as the i-phones.

Of course the g1 phone itself doesn't appeal to a lot of people nor does its interface. But I don't care. lol I use it to check my emails for work related problems, server went down, or if our database went bonkers, etc...

Or if my friends are having coding problems they can send their code my way. I'll open it up in plain text, flip open the qwerty keyboard and make changes. It's a lot easier to do this then having to do it with a virtual keyboard. Again not your average user. :P

I do believe Android will slowly venture itself to other phones in the next few years. Since the OS is made to be use on many different phones to come, I don't see it stopping anytime soon. It's not going to take it by storm though, but it will happen lol

SW: Android is open source. Google does not restrict apps on Android Market. OS update is over the air (no USB cable needed)
HW: Multiple OEMs from HTC (G1, Magic), Motorola (Cliq), Samsung (Moment), to Dell

iPhone is good, but Apple will never license OX-S or iTunes out, much less making it open source. Apple will never loose control on approving apps on Apps Store. Apple will never let another device maker to make smartphones based on iPhone core hardware technologies.

Overall user experience on G1 is not as good as iPhone. Major flaw is lack of MS Outlook support. But the HTC now supports Outlook in some markets with G2/Magic.

As good as Apple, innovations and growth usually come from many instead of one, over the long run, and it does not depend on the liver condition of Steve Jobs.
