Symbian is dead. Even Nokia has dropped the OS in favor of the new one(smartphone related phones).I first tried symbian when i bought the E61 for 450 bucks... Since then i've tried the E72,N95,5800 the OS is very bland and not very intuitive. Nokia is not very popular in the US, but it is Huge everywhere else(Asia and the UK).

Symbian is weak in U.S. because Nokia can not get any market share. One reason is phones, apps and service in the U.S. are controlled (until Apple and Google came along) by wireless operators, which Nokia has not established strong partnership and relationships with. In the E.U. and Asia, Nokia flourishes with open market channel where major OEMs can dominate brand appeal, marketing channel (Nokia store), services (Ovi), where operators have less control.
Nokia is making Symbian completely open source next year, but I am not sure how far they have progressed. But no one is ignorant enough to discount volume and world leading market position of Nokia.
WSJ reported a while back that iPhone is selling poorly because it does not support mobile TV and Japanese kanji. Would love to see the article link.
