Default Windows 7

I guess I may be the only person in the world who uses Windows Vista and has no problems with it. In fact, I kind of like it.

Anyway, starting tomorrow, Microsoft is making copies of Windows 7 available at a deep discount. See here: http://www.cnn.com/2009/TECH/ptech/0...ade/index.html

Thoughts on this new software? Is it worth upgrading? Worth the price?

with MS stuff, i am really not much of a "pre-pay" buyer. i was one of the first to try the vista, and while it was good for a few days, it's just a big headache and eventually all my machines went back to winxp, which is a far more solid platform

the windows 7 could be good, but unless it's out and i hear good enough reasons to upgrade, otherwise....

im fine with vista too actually
but i have been trying out win 7 RC and it is improved but i view it as vista SP3
haha

i work at ASUS and now we have a program for everyone
from July and on, most (if not all) notebooks that come with vista will have free upgrade eligibility to windows 7

so you register online when u buy the NB
and when win 7 ships on Oct. 22 or 23, ASUS starts deliverying the win 7 DVD to the registrants that bought the notebook within this time

Only reason I'm not using Windows 7 RC now is because it doesn't fold as well as Vista. I got crappy packets all the time with 7, and they just seem to take longer to process. However though what I noticed was that 7 used less resources as an OS overall.

Oh sorry. I was referring to folding@home, top thread of the clubhouse.

As for the resources, with just a few small programs open and firefox also, I'm using about 2GB out of my 8GB total. With Windows 7, it used about 1-1.5GB out of 8GB which was better.

we are lovin Windows 7 here at work (RC).

Def upgrade.

The first thing we do when new machines come in with Vista (FREE), we reformat them with XP. Now with the speed of Windows 7 we are going to finally move all our users up.

Great product. Vista? Not so much.

Vista is fine if you have the iron to run it. I'm an IT guy so I eat my own dog food before considering deploying to the company. I've been using Vista for a couple years now on a dual-core machine with 4G RAM at home. (2G RAM is the minimum for acceptable performance and you need more depending on your work habits and how many apps you have open at once). I like it but there is no compelling reason to replace perfectly fine working hardware with more capable hardware in a business environment just to run Vista. XP is fine and it runs the applications we need to run.

Windows 7 comes at a time when mainstream hardware mostly meets the above criteria where it didn't when Vista was first released. It may fare better for this reason in the home market but I doubt the business community will be enticed to upgrade.

I'm sure I'll install Wndows 7 on my home machine when it's released but,
for the company desktops, I see no reason to do so. XP is doing just fine running our applications as it always has.

vista wasn't given me that many problems compared to other people. Of course I tweaked vista to run the way I wanted too. But for 50 bones i'll upgrade.

xp doesn't require as much memory or processor, but apart from that, vista blows it out of the water. search on start menu alone is worth it. sidebar's great on widescreens. no more defrags (it's automatic), it's more secure, better looking visually, live previews of app screens on taskbar hover, better thumbnail support of folders in explorer...

windows 7 is an optimization of vista and will be a good thing.

i'm a bit confused on upgrade path though, i have vista ultimate but given that i'm not on a domain maybe i only need home premium??
