Any gun owners stockpiling up?
For you know what.
I am building a 2nd AR15, I found a killer deal on 7.62x39 ammo from Academy $150/1000 for Monarch 123gr FMJ so I bought 3000 rounds I need to get some more AR magazines maybe more 5.56, and I think I'll be good for a while

Yes, although sadly. I wish people could recall when the constitution meant something.

Even made our radio news today although the story indicated people weren't out buying because of Obama being elected but rather because of the view of increasing crime rates due to the economy. I think the reason is more the former than the later.
You guys will like Cali gun laws. Just hope the latest proposal doesn't pass where the last round feeds backwards so you shoot yourself.

article earlier this week firearms sales were up 8-10%. Vehicle, housing, luxury sales have slumped but a gun is always worth it

Wasn't very hard to find. I have a feeling that this was the story that generated the radio story I heard. Whether I believe the conclusions as to the reasons, not entirely unexpected IMO.
Bad economy, Obama trigger gun sales rise
Fredrick Kunkle / Washington Post
Americans have cut back on buying cars, furniture and clothes in a tough economy, but there's one consumer item that's still enjoying healthy sales: guns. Purchases of firearms and ammunition have risen 8 percent to 10 percent this year, according to state and federal data.
Several variables drive sales, but many dealers, buyers and experts attribute the increase in part to concerns about the economy and fears that if Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois wins the presidency, he will join with fellow Democrats in Congress to enact gun controls. Obama has said he believes in an individual right to bear arms but that he also supports "common-sense safety measures."
"Even though (Obama) has a lot going for him, he's not very pro-gun," said Paul Pluff, a spokesman for Smith & Wesson, which has reported higher sales.
Gun owners haven't been especially thrilled about the prospect of Sen. John McCain in the White House, either. Still, they see the Arizona Republican as less of a threat than Obama.
Gun purchases have also been climbing because of the worsening economy, which fuels fears of crime and civil disorder, industry sources and specialists said.
"Generally, we know that hard economic times always result in firearm sales," said James M. Purtilo, who publishes the Tripwire Newsletter.
Law enforcement reports show that guns are selling well this year. In 2008, there were 8.4 million background checks from Jan. 1 to Sept. 28, compared with 7.7 million in the same period last year, a 9 percent increase, according to the FBI's National Instant Criminal Background Check System.

Dammit I wish I had the cash laying around
I may try to buy in January.
My friend just finished his 5.56.
What kind of 7.62 upper are you using?
A 458 socom caliber would be fun as hell to build, but I cant justify the price on them. The rounds are REALLY pricey too

As much as I like Obama, I hate his stance -along with most other Democrats - on guns.
Wait, I live in California so either way, we are screwed.

$25 for an M-1 Garand is a sweet deal. Although many people believe that 70 y/o rifle is an antique, I've watched match competitors consistently put 8/10 in the 10X ring (about the size of a frozen orange juice can lid) from 600 yds. - with an standard M-1 and the factory iron sights (using hand-loaded 30-06 ammo). Supposedly the max effective range was 440 yards, but the experts routinely tore the 10X out of the target at that range. 600 yards began to be a contest. The black on a match target is about 2' in diameter and at 600 yds. - and is almost a figment of your imagination. Pretty fair accuracy for a high-volume manufacture semi-auto with a peepsight.
The M-1 did have a nasty reputation for smashing thumbs when closing the bolt on an empty receiver. The drill was to depress the follower down into the receiver, unlocking the bolt, and allowing the bolt to slam home under spring pressure. This was done by extending your hand flat, palm to the left and the edge of your palm engaging the locking rod handle, and sliding it down alongside the receiver on the right side of the weapon - as you slid your thumb into the receiver, depressing the follower.
The idea was to unlock the bolt and allow it to slide over the follower assembly without chambering your thumb. If you held your hand in the proper position, in theory the advancing operating rod handle attached to the bolt would roll your hand forward, extracting your thumb in the nick of time. It took a week or so to master the drill, but it soon became second nature. The spring was rather stiff, and the unwary or untrained could be caught by the bolt slamming home with their thumb still in the receiver. New M-1 (and later, M-14) owners could often be spotted by the black right thumbnail. Veterans of a certain age will remember it well.
Despite its age and humble Springfield pedigree, it's still a formidable weapon. At nine and a half pounds, it's heavy by today's standards, holds only eight rounds (loaded in a clip), and is a bit long for urban assault, but especially at ranges over 100 yards, it will still easily outperform an AK for accuracy. It's rate of fire is impressive, but with only 8 rounds in the spring clip, the shooter is better served by marksmanship than the "pray and spray" technique. It is relatively simple to use, is easily disassembled and cleaned in the field, and is practically unstoppable under the worst combat conditions. At 200 yards and beyond, it is still one of the deadliest weapons in the arsenal.
