I have two more weeks here - so hopefully I'll get in another 3 more WU's, then I will uninstall the SMP and setup the console version and hopefully nobody will notice that runnning.

I can't leave the SMP client running as it is too obvious it is running and whomsover ends up getting this pc, may very well kill it completely.

Yep, I'm one of them, though I started rising pretty quickly, I stopped all but my slow pok 4400X2 CCTV computer. My other systems just use too much power. 276watts+330watts+205watts+225watts+176W=1212 watts. That comes out to over $130.00 a month not to mention the A/C cost to overcome the additional heat from all of the systems. I could almost lease a 3 series for that amount! When my wife asked why all of the systems were going she almost slapped me silly when I explained it.

It would be nice to have them active. XCPUs has a good active list and there are some teams who have high participation levels. On average, the teams I scan through seem to have 40-60% active members. Some are even being sustained by one or two people.

I've come across people in my usual encounters who don't view F@H seriously, they may do a few WU's then abandon it. It's sad because I can't think of any who don't have a friend or family member impacted by the research of F@H. Considering how much it costs to fund research, what we contribute through F@H is quite easy. It is their computer so it is their decision on contributing.

It's unfortunatly not quite that simple. FaH will cost you some money to run in the form of electricity bills, not only for the PC itself, but the added heat they put out means longer running AC times so the cost could be substantial to some people. Add to that the fact that FaH stresses PC compenents, and then you have people who cannot afford to buy a new PC should something go wrong, shy away from the project. Many of us on here are fortunate enough that the added cost isn't TOO much of an issue, and on the off chance that we happen to fry a processor, or video card or even a PS3, while not fun, probably won't kill us financially.

I was about to load it up on Sunday, but right now my VAIO is running stats programs for work again (we weren't quite done on some projects), so I have to wait until I start work on some upcoming qualitative studies (I am in market research) to get this thing cooking.

I have a Dell Dimension 9200 with Intel Core2 CPU 4300 @ 1.8GHz with 3gb ram. I guess I will change to the SMP client after I'm done with this WU. What kind of frames/sec are you guys getting? It is showing 28/sec for me, but on my slightly slower laptop I was getting 30.

EDIT: never mind...I realized it actually says sec/frame which would make sense.

You could either have a Pentium 4 with hyper threading (like I have on my desktop machine which shows exactly what you're seeing) or a dual core processor.

The SMP may be overkill if you have a P4 w/HT.

I just hooked up two computers in the house with this program. I think I might go out and build more computers solely for this purpose.

Lol at my certificate... might have to get that framed.

I stumbled upon this nice comparison of processors for folding. Keep in mind the SMP core only uses Gromacs WUs.

They've also got a nice clear intro to folding I'll ask to use here

I'm about to install the SMP client on my laptop right now. I guess i can be active on this site that way. I got a HP DV9000z w/AMD 2.0Ghz dual core w/ 2 gig ram running windows vista home premium. Anyone had any problems with vista?
