I feel like I've stepped into a Nerd Convention and don't know where I'm supposed to go next. LOL. Everything in here is way over my head. I downloaded the software and joined just now.

You have a dual core system. Make absolutely certain you're using the SMP client, you'll get work done 3x as fast, and earn 5-8x as many points doing so:

http://www.stanford.edu/%7Ekasson/fo...P%20Client.EXE

When you run the executable, it'll make a subdirectory under Program Files. Go there and run install.bat. You'll need to give it a username and password with administrative priveleges, and then you're on your way. Do NOT select the option to run it as a service.

Somewhere in this thread I missed why selecting the option to run it as a service is a bad thing. Could you explain, and if I've installed it as a service on the several boxes I have running here, should I uninstall and reinstall to fix this?

The single-processor version works fine installed as a service. The SMP version loads a process scheduler which wastes 10-50% of your CPU time moving the threads around. Stanford themselves don't recommend using it at the moment, because of this issue.

Btw, you may want to add your scoreboard to your sig rather than inserting it into your posts.

ug. In the last 2 days I had to shut down:

3 of my 8 core Xeon machines (only 1 running now)
1 Core 2 duo system.

My numbers will plummet for a bit I suspect an average of 7K-8K a day.

My guess is you didn't run install.bat and give it a user account/password with administrative privileges. That is REQUIRED for the SMP client.

It's the service that they don't recommend using with the SMP client...not the client itself. I've had the SMP client running for two months on two very modest machines, producing 900ppd each. Same as my PS3 does.

Yep, that's most likely what happened. The error messages in the screenshot posted are what happens when install.bat is not run with the administrator password.

Worked.!! Thank you.!!

I dont have a password on this machine, but I set one up, used default User/Domain, and typed in the password.

Now its folding.

Its it really that much faster?
If it is I should be doing +2000 ppd.

**edit**....I did notice that CPU usage went from ~60% too 100% (running kinda warm 62 C)
but I can still use the computer with out having to wait.!!

I'm glad you got it working! As far as the ppd, that'll depend on the type of the CPU; dual cores see an improvement anywhere between 60 and 100%. C2Ds usually see an increase around 80% going to smp.

Most dual cores will be doing 1000ppd with the smp client.

Word has it that the Phenom Black Edition might come out tomorrow at dual-core prices. If that means under 200$, it's almost a no brainer question for anyone looking for a cheap Christmas upgrade. Double your ppd for <200$, sure!
