Doc Removing Vulgar Forehead Tattoo Forced On Upstate Teen

POSTED: 8:40 am EDT April 15, 2005
UPDATED: 11:06 am EDT April 15, 2005

DETROIT -- An upstate New York teenager who says his friends forcibly tattooed an obscene comment and image on his forehead has begun the process of having it all removed.

Suburban Detroit plastic surgeon Gregory Roche said he spent about 10 minutes this week lasering away five letters of the 13-letter message about male genitalia on 17-year-old Milton Romanowski's face.

"The way it works is the laser sees the different colors, targets the ink, smashes it up and the blood takes it to the liver, where the body can get rid of it," Roche, who runs the Bloomfield Hills Cosmetic-Laser Surgery Center, said Thursday.

"They put it on with a homemade gun, so the ink wasn't as deep as it usually is and it's easier to remove. He actually already had removed one letter with an eraser."

Roche and Romanowski met after a Detroit-area radio show heard the story and matched them up. The teenager, who quit school in 9th grade and normally has a job wrapping computer paper, borrowed $96 to get to Detroit from the Norwich area of New York. The Detroit Fire Department picked him up at the bus depot Monday and took him to the suburban WRIF station, the doctor said.

A message was left Thursday for a station manager at WRIF.

Romanowski, who returned to New York on Tuesday, could not be reached Thursday for comment.

He testified in a court hearing last month that Kenneth D. Peer, 23, of South Berlin, N.Y., and Travis D. Foster, 17, of Earlville, N.Y., restrained him in a chair while they used a tattoo gun to mark his forehead with the four-word sentence and image of a body part.

Romanowski told police that Foster, a friend since childhood, was mad because he thought Romanowski was trying to steal his girlfriend.

He testified that they were "laughing hysterically," as they applied the tattoo, and he told the doctor that he tried to fight them but eventually gave up.

Roche, who never had seen a forced tattoo before, said it likely took up to 45 minutes to apply and may have been less painful than a professional tattoo because it wasn't as deep. He says three more treatments starting next month should be enough to get rid of it.

Normally the removal procedure costs about $1,500, but Roche is doing it for free, he said.

Peer and Foster are charged with second-degree assault and first-degree unlawful imprisonment, felonies that could bring up to seven years if the pair is convicted.

Their lawyers have argued that Romanowski's account of the tattooing is preposterous and said he consented to the ordeal.

Takes the idea of writing stupid stuff on a drunk's forehead with permanent marker when he/she passes out to a whole new level...

These kids should get the whole 7 years. What retards!

Consented, my a - -. Treat Peer and Foster as adults and, if convicted, lock them up so they won't get out as juveniles on their 18th Birthday...less than a year away. If they're NOT convicted, warn them that any reprisal on Romanowski will have SERIOUS consequences.
