Default NEED HELP : Clunking Noise in Suspension

I hope someone can help me with a problem I am having with my 1992 Lexus SC300 Auto.
When going over bumps or uneven pavement, I am hearing a clunking noise from the front passenger
suspension. I am pretty sure that the sound is coming from the lower control arm because we hooked
a sound amplifier to the arm and the noise was apperant then. Any ideas or suggestions?
I have been told that it is probably my lower control arm bushings but I am not sure. If it is, can you buy just the bushings, or do you have to buy the whole arm?

Wow....a "sound amplifier "!
That's pretty neat- I never heard of that gadget before, at least for diagnosing suspension noises. Did you rig something up, or is that specifically for such purposes?

The device is designed specifically for hunting down noises in a vehicle while you drive it. It has leads with alligator clips on the end that you clamp to whatever it is you want to listen to. It sends the signal to a box that sends the sound to headphones that you wear while driving.
How hard are those bushings to replace?

Like I said, that's one nifty gadget! J C Whitney does not seem to carry it, though. Where'd ya get it?

Replacing the bushings is not too bad, especially considering how much the Lexus stealership wants for whole new control arms. Here's one good discussion of what's involved:

I had the clunking noise also when going over speed bumps. I had JIC's coilovers installed and now no more noise! Nom I'm sure the control arm bushings need replacing(93sc400-94k miles), but as of now with the new coilovers, no more noise!

In that case it could be a bumpstop (or lack thereof) on the strut making the noise?

I am a Service writer at Midlands Honda in Columbia and we have that device in the shop. It really makes
finding hard to hear noises and narrows down where they are coming from quickly.
