Default Understeer at the limit

Hello there CL.

I'm wondering if anyone has a cheap way to fix the understeer push at the limit when cornering. I noticed that there is quite a bit of understeer at the limit of cornering in this car. It's not particularly bad, but it's definitely there.

My car is a stock 3IS 350 F-sport running the stock tires.

I'm going to be installing Michelin Pilot SS tires soon and F-sport springs. I was thinking of putting on a rear sway bar to get the rear to come around a bit.

Just BTW, I don't want to modify this car too much because it's mainly driven by my fiancé. I just drive it sometimes, but when I do drive the car. I seriously drive the car.. lol

I was just hoping someone could provide some insight on how to fix the slight understeer. Just to give a frame of reference to what I'm looking for, I enjoy neutral handling w/ slight oversteer. I don't like a car that oversteers or understeers too much.

Thanks for your help guys!

when i put PSS on the 3IS the steering felt a lot more neutral. On my GT i went with a square setup to get rid of the understeer the staggered perf package had.

Installing stickier tires won't help you with the under steering problem. If anything, you should go square setup.

With traction control fully off, the car feels pretty neutral to me. the stock tires have just enough slippage.

Not sure if a beefier aftermarket rear sway bar is available for the 3IS but if so, this would be a cost-effective way to reduce understeer and potentially introduce a slight oversteer characteristic with your car.

What I've found at the track is if you run a higher pressure in the rear it makes it more neutral.

Well...that ended quickly.

Found this thread on a search for understeer because my AWD 350 F-Sport has some decent understeer

A nice upgrade would be the RC350 swaybar, but unfortunately the rear end has to be dropped for access. By rear end, the subframe has to come down. it's not like a traditional car where it's easy to slide under and bolt it on in half an hour. You can probably get away (if anyone wants to do this) with partially lowering the subframe, i imagine. but you'll probably want to get an alignment after. Or you can take your chances.

Coming from a BRZ, while slow it was great in corners, my IS305 Fsport in sport + just pushes in corners. First loop i took i planted the power mid off ramp loop i expected the back to come around and all the over lords to kick in and put me back in line nope it just pushed the front into heavy under steer.

I had a BRZ as well and surely you couldn't have expected them to handle even remotely the same??

yep... and people want to stiffen up the front with those racer bushings.

the rear subframe is tuned way too soft on the IS. quite a bit of movement.

maybe you can consider running rear wheels and tires up front and adding an RC350 sway bar. should even things out a bit.

I thought about it and then read on here that replacing the rear sway bar is a headache to R&R because the entire subframe with dif and all needs to come down.

Solution: cut sway bar in half, thread both ends through, then weld together. If you don't have a welder, you could probably get away with a combination of JB weld and a bunch of duct tape.
