Default Why do ls400 caliper need notched to fit?

They bolt up with no issues on my 97 so I am wondering why people say to notch/grind part of it for proper fitment?

I also can not find a clear pic as to where exactly people are doing this.

I sort of recall it was a small edge of the part surrounding one of the bolts that keeps the caliper from rotating all the way down on the bracket -- but there are likely a few YMMV aspects that differ with every install. For example, my SC bolts worked fine without washers to space them from hitting the rotors. I put new LS bolts on, anyway.

Ya just buy 2 new bolts from lexus they are not expensive. Only one hole need that short bolt. No grinding on my 97.

Interesting I wonder if maybe 97 and up did not need this done to fit? It seems like the information is vague out there at best as far as the bolts I just used the ls400 bolts that came with the calipers.
I can see needing to notch them for a more relaxed fit as the upper "ear" is against the knuckle but it does not seem to bother anything .

My 92 and 93 both needed a small amount ground off the caliper bracket due to one edge of the caliper interfering. Most people on here have said grind the edge off the caliper, but if you ever replace them then you have to grind the new one. There is only a small interference, it was something like a 1/8" to 1/4" divet out of the caliper bracket so I made it a very smooth transition just to make sure it doesn't ever develop a crack or fail at that point in any way. When you go to bolt the caliper on, it becomes very obvious where the grinding must be done. And the SC bolts are too long, at least for these two models, so I didn't remember to order the LS bolts so I put 2 washers on and they clear the rotor no problem.

I had to grind a small section to fit the LS400 calipers on my 96 SC300 as well do not recall the exact location but it was an easy 1 minute job. Might be a slight design difference from 97+???

did you have to make the grind to locate the bolt holes or would they bolt up just fit to tight when bolting them down?

I just removed the backing plate and the calipers/rotors have no problems fitting.

On my 99 SC, I did have to grind (file) down an area on the caliper to get a better fit. I had a hard time just getting my 98 LS400 caliper to fit right on. Maybe depends on the year of the LS400 caliper? My friend that was helping me was saying it was not fitting on and then I remembered that was mentioned on this forum.

Interesting that there is no solid proof of what needs to be done and for what years.

I think everyone does it differently that's why. I picked the way with the least amount of interference possible. Since I swap calipers, it needs to be an on-off ordeal.

I had to grind down a bit on the upper caliper hole a bit to get it to line up with the hole on the hub.

I think we have told you in this thread exactly what needs to be done, what is so confusing about grinding a notch where the interference is? You are over complicating this, it is extremely simple.

As far as what years, I told you for sure 92 and 93. If a 97 needs some small grinding, do it. If it clears, great.

Default caliper griding

i just did the LS upgrade last night and its on a 97 and i had to grind a little bit. the issue is the TOP bolt does not tighten all the way to the bracket/car/hub because there is a little excess metal below it where the caliper widens out. thus the caliper does not sit flush or straight. so i had to grind it down. it is safe to grind there as there is no fluid anywhere near it you are just making the edge straight so it sits flush to to the car.

attached are some pictures. and how i made it look in the end
