I was very fortunate to find a local junk yard with a wrecked 2007 IS 250. they charged me only $120 for each axle. they do not appear to be leaking. however I will have them rebuilt before putting them on the car.best of luck to anyone else who's trying to solve this problem.

Be careful about trying to disassemble the rear axles and if so, make sure whoever is doing it has the parts to put them back together before touching them. Lexus does not recommend disassembling them and does not sell the parts to do so.
