Hey guys, took my GS300 to my personal mechanic, who is a master certified Lexus mechanic who runs his own shop. Car just rolled over 90k this past week so I thought now would be a good time to replace the ball joints. Was pleasantly surprised to find out the ball joints in my car were perfectly fine. These are the original parts on the car. Not sure if the 2002 models were fixed but apparently I'm good to go. He recommended I have them re-looked at in about 9 months or so just to be extra safe.
caster arm #2 control arm got redesigned for 2003-2005 models... Not sure about the ball joints...
i understand that he is a ASE mechanic but at 90k miles there's bound to be play in the ball joint which makes it prone to given out and snapping.. my upper control arms had tons of play in them at 73k miles.... Even worse if your lowered... the suspension suffers even more
Thanks guys. Trust me, I pressed him on the safety as he knows they are prone to fail and he said I have nothing to worry about. I've been using this guy for many years and I completely trust him. I don't think he would put me in harms way, especially for something as simple as a ball joint replacement.
Glad to see other people have had some good longevity with their ball joints.
P.S. My car is completely stock with no lowering whatsoever so that may be part of the reason they are still in good shape at 90k.
Mines an 2002 and replaced them at 75k i think it was. It wasn't bad, but did make a little squeak from time to time, my car did spend time in NYC though, so it needs to be taken into account. When I was at the dealer I was talking to a guy with 140k and he hadn't changed the ball joints yet and even the dealer who checked them said they were fine, so it must vary.
