Default Question Regarding Rack and Pinion

My searches have not yielded what I'm wanting to know.

Car: 97 SC400 with a reman'd rack n pinion that was replaced 15k miles ago before I bought the car.
Problem: With engine off moving steering wheel side to side a clunk can be heard and felt in the wheel. Tie rods are tight. Found that the rack piston has play in it. Car drives like crap also but there are other contributing factors as well.

Question. Was told by a retailer that sales reman'd rack and pinions that the rack can be adjusted to get rid of the play. He said the adjustment nut was on top of rack near where the column attaches.

Is this true?

Thanks.

That's a good question. I have never heard of that for the bolt. I know which one you are talking about also. Have you checked the inner tie rods?

Yep. Originally thought the drivers side was bad but after removing the boot found it to be tight and noticed the play in the piston when shaking the wheel back and forth. It doesn't leak. I called the shop in Florida that replaced it and I've exceeded the mileage warranty by 3k miles. Don't wan't to buy another rack if I don't have to.

Most re manufactured racks have a life time warranty on the rack but not the labor to replace it. Unless they put in one from Toyota which is 1 yr and 12K miles but at more than twice the price.

I just had mine replaced by a local shop ........

Requires a wheel alignment, too.

Sounds like my luck.

So I'm guessing no one has done this...
